You might want to cross these off your Costco shopping list.
Key Point
- Costco has lots of great deals.
- Certain items are worth buying in small quantities or elsewhere.
- Baking supplies and condiments can go bad before they’re used up, and you’ll likely find better deals for toys and canned goods elsewhere.
The great thing about shopping at Costco is that you can find a wide range of products at great prices, from produce to dairy to paper goods to apparel. I often get less credit card tabs than I do.
But not Costco everytime We have the lowest price available. Even so, there are certain items that the average consumer doesn’t feel like they need to buy in bulk.
1. Baking supplies
If you like bread, you may be in the habit of buying flour and other items in bulk. But even if you seal the flour in an airtight container (you’ll need a few of them to accommodate a Costco-sized bag), over time, it can go bad for you.
If you’re the type who really bakes a dozen cookies every other week, buying baking supplies at Costco might do the trick. You might want to watch out for sales in regular supermarkets and avoid buying baking supplies in bulk.
2. Seasoning
You may use seasonings on a regular basis. But that doesn’t mean you’ll get the best deal at Costco, as supermarkets often have discounts on condiments during the summer and at various times of the year, at which point 1 oz. The cost per unit can be significantly lower.
Also, seasonings tend to sit less by their nature. How often do you leave a bottle of ketchup on the table when you and your family are eating? A smaller quantity could be much better.
3. Toys
Costco usually offers great deals on toys. But you can often find even bigger discounts on sites like Amazon and big box retailers like Walmart and Target.
If you’re shopping at Costco and find a toy that’s great value, pick it up. But you wouldn’t want to make a special trip to Costco for the express purpose of loading a cart with toys.
4. Canned food
At Costco, you can find a wide variety of canned goods, from vegetables to tuna. However, you may not want to scoop them up.
As with condiments, it’s common for supermarkets to offer big discounts on canned goods throughout the year. So waiting for those sales to hit saves you a lot more money than stocking up on Costco.
Costco can be a great source of groceries, household items, and even electronics and gifts. So, if they’re usually on your Costco shopping list, it might be time to ditch them.
