This summer seemed to be the season for “revenge trips”. But surges in demand, airline shortages and severe storms have upended the script for many who decided to travel like 2019.
A recent Forbes Advisor survey of 2,000 travelers revealed that 61% of respondents experienced flight delays or cancellations this summer. Of that 61%, 83% lost money as a result of travel problems, adding another layer of pain to what many hoped would be a “normal” summer travel season. Did.

Flight delays and cancellations are leading causes of travel disruption
Some travelers were lucky enough to escape the airport chaos relatively unscathed, while others battled everything from additional expenses to missed flights.
Here are the top summer travel issues cited by 61% of respondents who experienced flight delays or cancellations:
- Nearly one in three travelers (31%) arrived at their hotel or resort late and had to pay for the night they didn’t use.
- More than one in four respondents (26%) had to pay for their own transportation and hotel room while waiting for the next available flight.
- 19% of travelers lost money on missed prepaid activities due to delays or cancellations.
- 17% were unable to attend milestone events such as weddings, graduations and family reunions.
- Another 17% of travelers had to cancel their travel plans altogether, losing money on airport parking, transportation, kennels, and/or unused hotel rooms.
- 13% of travelers report missing a cruise due to flight cancellations or delays.
Flight delays and cancellations leave travelers stuck at airports for an average of 5+ hours
