Travel Cancellation Insurance/Travel Interruption Benefits
Anything from a broken bone to an unexpected job loss can ruin your plans for a relaxing Bahamas beach vacation. If you are planning a fall trip to the Bahamas, you should also consider hurricane season.
Purchasing travel insurance for your trip to the Caribbean with adequate trip cancellation and trip interruption insurance gives you peace of mind that your travel investment is covered.
travel cancellation insurance
Trip Cancellation Insurance will reimburse 100% of your prepaid non-refundable costs if you need to cancel your trip for the reasons stated in the policy. These reasons typically include:
- Destination has hurricane warning
- Injury, illness or death of you, your family or your companion
- unemployment
- jury duty
- Mechanical or equipment failure of common carriers (airplanes, etc.)
- A natural disaster, fire or burglary that makes your home uninhabitable
- attack
- terrorist attack
- Being asked to work during an upcoming business trip
While this insurance can be purchased up to the day before your scheduled departure time, Carol Mueller of Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection points out that it’s important to purchase hurricane trip cancellation insurance early.
“After storms are named, it’s too late to buy insurance to protect against trip cancellations if a hurricane damages your destination,” says Müller. We recommend that you purchase a travel insurance plan that includes hurricane coverage immediately after paying for

travel interruption insurance
Trip Interruption Insurance will reimburse up to 150% of the cost of your trip if you are in the Bahamas but need to end your trip early for the reasons stated in the policy. This may include:
- Injury or illness of the customer or companion
- Injuries or illnesses of returning family members who need urgent care
- Injuries or illnesses of business partners forced to return to their home countries
- Hurricanes with names that make destinations inaccessible or uninhabitable
If you qualify for a trip interruption claim, you can get a refund if you book a one-way economy ticket home at the last minute. This insurance can also cover prepaid, non-refundable travel costs lost due to early departure, up to the policy limit.
Trip delays: if you get stuck on the way
If your connecting flight to the Bahamas is canceled and you’re stuck overnight in Miami, travel delay insurance can help.
Travel Delay Insurance will reimburse you for reasonable expenses incurred as a result of the delay.
“These plans can cover expenses during delays such as meals and accommodation, as well as additional flight costs to reach your destination,” says Squaremouth’s Megan Moncrief. “They can also provide reimbursement for prepaid expenses that the traveler has lost due to weather-related delays, such as her one night at the hotel or the entire trip.”
As with any other compensation, refunds are only available in the event of delays for reasons stated in the policy.
Possible reasons include:
- civil disorder
- Common carrier delays such as flights
- Injury, illness or death of you or your companion
- hijack
- Natural disasters
- attack
- traffic accident
It’s also important to note that travel delay insurance usually has a waiting period of 6 or 12 hours before coverage begins. When purchasing travel insurance, look for a plan with a short waiting period for travel delay coverage.
Travel medical insurance for island injuries and illnesses
Travel medical insurance is also important to consider when traveling to the Bahamas. According to Mueller, travelers tend to think that if they have health insurance at home, they are fully protected. However, most U.S. health insurance does not cover expenses incurred outside the country, and Medicare is not accepted in other countries.
If you become ill or injured while traveling, travel medical insurance covers x-rays, doctor and hospital bills, ambulance services, lab work, and medications up to your policy limit. If you need more intensive care than is available locally, medical evacuation travel insurance can help pay for medical care to the nearest appropriate treatment center.
Moncrief recommends purchasing a travel insurance plan with at least $50,000 in emergency medical coverage and $100,000 in medical evacuation coverage. But with the most generous travel insurance, he would be covered for $500,000 in travel medical expenses per person, and $1 million in evacuation coverage if he needed more protection.
“From the little things like being sick and needing to see a doctor to needing an emergency medical evacuation, we need to protect ourselves from financially devastating emergencies,” says Mueller. .
If you’re planning adventurous activities in the Bahamas, such as parasailing or deep-sea scuba diving, you should also make sure your travel insurance includes active sports coverage.

Baggage insurance: if your swimsuit gets wet while traveling
Loss of Baggage Insurance allows you to claim a refund of the depreciation of your baggage and its contents (up to your insurance limit) if your baggage is lost or stolen during your trip. Not all products are eligible, so you should check the policy for exclusions.
Baggage insurance is usually secondary coverage, so if the airline has lost your baggage, you may need to file a claim with the airline first. If your personal property is stolen in the Bahamas, you must first file a claim with homeowners or renters insurance.
Baggage Delay Insurance reimburses incidental costs if you need to purchase items while waiting for your baggage to arrive. Just a toothbrush and a change of clothes may make you cringe until your suitcase arrives.
Baggage Delay Benefits usually have a waiting period of 6, 12 or 24 hours. Claims cannot be made if the baggage is found before the end of the waiting period.
Consider upgrading your cancellation/interruption insurance
“Cancellation for any reason” travel insurance
In addition to our standard travel insurance options, some plans offer the option of adding “Cancellation for Any Cause” (CFAR) coverage for an additional fee.
This highest level of coverage generally reimburses 75% of your prepaid travel costs if you decide to cancel for reasons not covered by policy.
Adding CFAR coverage increases the cost of travel insurance by about 50%, but investing in it gives you more flexibility in your travel plans.
“CFAR has gained popularity during the pandemic and continues to be a way for travelers to prepare for the ever-changing travel landscape,” says Moncrief.
One caveat, for a successful CFAR claim, you must cancel your trip at least 48 hours prior to your scheduled departure date.
Additionally, if you wish to purchase CFAR coverage, you must generally guarantee 100% of your travel costs within 14 days of making your first travel deposit.
“Interrupted for any reason” travel insurance
Some travel insurance companies offer “interrupted for any reason” (IFAR) travel insurance. This upgrade is for those who, for whatever reason, want to shorten their trip and receive a partial refund.
IFAR coverage typically adds 3% to 10% to the cost of travel insurance. Rewards are generally not applied until at least 48 hours after travel commences. However, you can return home early for any reason and will be reimbursed up to 75% of your insurance travel expenses.
Generally, you should purchase IFAR coverage within 14-20 days of making your first trip deposit.

cruise travel insurance to bahamas
When cruising to the Bahamas or other destinations, we recommend that you consider a cruise travel insurance plan.
Cruisers have unique travel needs, so you should look for travel insurance that provides the coverage you need. This may include generous compensation for connection failures, disruption of onboard services and refunds for prepaid excursions.
For example, the AXA Assistance Platinum plan offers $1,500 per person missed cruise connection coverage, $3,000 per person lost baggage coverage, generous medical and evacuation limits, and travel concierge services.
