Michael Rhys said the housefly is a treasure hunt.
Liss bought the store with his wife in 2014 after moving to Black Mountain from Pennsylvania.
“It was kind of a coincidence,” Rhys said. “Anyway Black She ended up moving to the Mountain, but her wife noticed this was for sale and said, ‘Hey, I have a great idea. You should buy this store.’ So we I did it. I’ve spent the last eight years trying not to screw it up. ”
Liss said he was “dissatisfied” with his job at the time, so he was open to buying the shop from the previous owner. He previously ran his business in small marketing and says he always struggled to find his next client. Liss described Housefly ownership as “pre-retirement.”
Liss says that purchasing Common Housefly has made it easier for him to fit into the new Black Mountain community.
“After spending a few weeks here, we walked around and got to know people, and they knew us,” said Rhys. We own the store, so we felt part of the community from day one.”
Marked as ‘Kitchen Emporium’ on the outside, this store has every kitchen item imaginable.
According to Liss, the clientele is a mix of locals and tourists. He said some tourists love the shop and some return year after year during their annual trips to Black his Mountain. Liss said locals like the store because it helps them avoid shopping at big box stores. According to Liss, the store meets customer needs.
Liss says he’s started to focus more on online sales to keep the business growing.
“Our big success right now is that we put a lot of effort into our online presence. Right now, 20-25% of our sales are online,” says Liss. “They’re mostly locals, not people who come to the store, they’re just additions. They’re all over the country. For some reason they sell a lot to New York, Dallas, Atlanta. I think it’s a big success.” We work on it every day.”
According to Liss, the biggest pain point is maintaining the right level of inventory.
He works with his staff to order different types of products for trade fairs, sales representatives, or new product introductions from customers.
“It’s hard to make sure you have enough, but it’s hard not to have too much,” says Liss. “What people struggle with in small businesses is cash flow, and it’s usually tied to inventory. I think it’s good.”
Looking to the future, Liss says he wants to continue and grow the business model that the original owner had.
“We want to keep our physical presence intact and grow our online business,” says Liss. “That’s kind of the goal.”
