SAN ANTONIO — About 48 million people quit their jobs last year in search of better working conditions and pay in what experts have dubbed the Great Resignation. With another 4.2 million more people resigning in August, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the trend doesn’t appear to be slowing.
But while millions of workers are rejecting jobs that don’t meet their standards, others have stayed put, praising their organizations for their meaningful work, responsive leadership and work-life balance that is actually balanced.
Those are among the traits employees lauded at the winning companies in the San Antonio Express-News’ 14th annual Top Workplaces survey. The program honors the best workplaces in San Antonio as recognized by their employees.
Together with Energage, a Pennsylvania research company, the Express-News this year invited more than 1,500 companies to participate, surveyed nearly 51,000 workers from across the region and tallied the results to name and rank the area’s Top Workplaces.
The 2022 list includes a record 103 companies — organized into small, midsize and large based on their number of regional employees — that scored high enough to land on the Top Workplaces list.
Leading the list for large organizations are Security Service Federal Credit Union, consulting firm Accenture and Randolph-Brooks Federal Credit Union.
Among midsize workplaces, JBGoodwin Realtors, contractor Jon Wayne Service Co. and real estate firm The NRP Group ranked as the top three.
Energy efficiency contractor San Antonio Smart Solutions, Fairway Independent Mortgage Corp. and home builder Chesmar Homes won in the small-companies category.
The heart of the Top Workplaces program is an employee survey. The 24-question survey collects feedback on workplace culture from those who know the organizations best: people who work there. They answered questions about their compensation, opportunities for growth and company culture that asked how much they agreed or disagreed with statements such as “My pay is fair for the work I do” and “New ideas are encouraged at this company.”
Employers were divided based on the number of employees in the region to compare feedback of similar-size groups. Organizations that exceeded benchmark scores for each size group made the winners list. Within those groupings, organizations were ranked by the aggregate score based on employee feedback; the more positive the employee responses, the higher the score, the higher the rank. The survey also determines special award winners based on standout scores on specific topics.
Most of the surveying was done between April and June.
