Bangkok’s new central station has become the first station in Thailand and Southeast Asia to offer full 5G connectivity. The government says it plans to offer wider his 5G coverage in transit and other facilities to improve services and promote equitable access to the technology.
The State Railways of Thailand and the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society have announced 5G coverage at the station as part of a campaign to transform Bangkok’s Krung Thep Apiwat Station, also known as Bang Sue Grand Station, into an intelligent transportation hub.
Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan said at the opening ceremony that the “5G smart station” will be the first station in Southeast Asia to adopt this latest technology. The 5G network installed at Bang Sue Grand Station is provided by Thai mobile network operator True Corporation.
Gen Prawit said the initiative reflects the government’s intention to increase 5G adoption and penetration. The government plans to roll out his 5G service in transit across the country to serve both locals and tourists.
5G technology will enable high-speed wireless connectivity for devices other than smartphones. Today’s event also showcased reception robots, smart his trolleys and an AI-powered security system that assist passengers in this major transport hub. (bullet train)
