The Biden administration announced a $1 billion grant program aimed at helping state and local governments address cybersecurity risks in their information technology systems.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security said its state and local cybersecurity grant program will provide state, local and territory governments with $185 million in fiscal 2022 and $1 billion over four years. The program, the first in U.S. history, was funded under a sweeping infrastructure spending bill passed last year.
The agency officially started the application process on September 16th. State and local governments have 60 days from that date to apply for the grant. This grant can be used to pay for new or existing cybersecurity programs.
DHS officials say the grant will help the government de-risk IT systems and make them more resilient to rapidly changing cyber threats. The funds will also help develop cybersecurity talent across the country’s communities. The Infrastructure Act will also provide a set of resources to support projects receiving grants, including state cybersecurity advisors and coordinators, according to the agency.
As the number of cyberattacks rises, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorcas said the nation will continue to strengthen its cybersecurity.[we must] Resource nations and local communities to build and strengthen cyber defenses. ”
