After losing their first game, the UW Whitewater football team is in tears. His one of the reasons for their success is Tommy Coates, an offensive weapon. He was a wide receiver his sophomore year and has compiled his line with impressive stats to this point in the season.
Coates attended high school at the De La Salle Institute in Chicago, Illinois and played three sports: soccer, basketball, and baseball. The talented receiver last year moved from North, Illinois to Whitewater from Central College.
Last season for the Warhawks Courts, he played in six games and had two receptions for 13 yards. This season he has already surpassed his 300 yards and added 5 touchdowns. With two years of qualification left, Coates is looking to push himself and take his existing set of skills to a new level.
Q: How long have you been playing soccer?
A: I’ve been playing soccer since third grade at St. Gabriel Grammar School. In fact, he was a running back when he was young, and turned to a wide receiver in high school.
Q: What made you choose to play for UW-Whitewater?
A: I’ve always wanted to come to Whitewater and play soccer. My decision was final when I decided I wanted to play soccer again with my brother who was on the soccer team here in Whitewater. We also loved the facilities and school at Whitewater. Everything about college really made the decision to come here an easy one.
Q: What is your fondest memory playing football? Was it here at UW-Whitewater or the year before college?
A: There’s definitely a Mary Hardin-Baylor match this year. Also, being able to beat Mount Caramel in my third year since high school was huge. It was the first time in 25 years that my school beat them.
Q: How do you feel about this year’s success, both individually and as a team?
A: It feels great to be on the winning team. It also feels great to have spent two years waiting and spending time sitting behind great players and learning from them. It feels good to have a bigger role than last year. It feels great to be able to help my team win and compete.
Q: What goals do you have as an individual and as a team to close out this season?
A: Our team’s goal has always been to win the conference. Coaches set that goal in camp before the season started and no one ever talks about it again. Your personal goal is to keep competing, perform well, and help your team win.
Whether you’re a fan of the Whitewater football team or not, it’s hard not to like a player with a strong work ethic. As the season draws to a close, Coates and the Warhawk football team hope to finish strong.
The team travels to UW-Platteville on October 22nd to face the Pioneers, before returning home on October 29th for Whitewater’s homecoming game. The team then moved to UW-Stout on November 5th, where he finished his season as a regular on November 12th. At home for the Senior Day game against UW-Stevens Point. Postseason games and times will be announced at a later date.
