Not only is his comment misleading or, more precisely, wrong, it is also selfish. That’s the only way to explain the ongoing resistance to major healthcare reforms among lawmakers like Cloud.
Health care is a major issue that has been effectively ignored by Cloud and his Republican compatriots.

GOP provides incomprehensible grunts. In fact, they advocate doing nothing. They want to repeal Obamacare (ACA) and take tens of millions of people out of health insurance.and it nothing.
The best reform is Medicare for All, as detailed below. Single-payer healthcare maintains and implements full choice of providers to save money.
Ten years ago I was a county commissioner in a rural Georgia county. I remember having breakfast with a Congressman (a moderate Democrat) and a very vocal older man who was a decorated veteran. This man said (his words, not mine) that the National Health Insurance is socialist, unconstitutional, and violates the “right to free trade.”He went on to say that the government could not run anything effectively and therefore could not run health care. said not to chant Unless it affects his Medicare or taxes(Much like the rationale as to why some red states refuse to expand Medicaid for the less fortunate.)
This veteran served his country. At one point he was a true patriot. But is he now? Does he put the needs of his compatriots ahead of his own, the cloud?
First of all, this veteran ignored the fact that our military is by definition “socialist”. Owned and operated by that incompetent federal government he complained about. Are our armies ineffective? What about the police and fire department? Are they socialist groups?
This man’s view would be ridiculous if it weren’t so prevalent in our society, especially among the elderly. How can you believe they are banning health insurance programs?
Clearly, Medicare is now the national health insurance and has been in use for nearly 60 years. But it’s woefully incomplete and broken because of Medicare Advantage, a scam run by a self-interested insurance company.
Additionally, Medicare is currently only for people over the age of 65. There is no magic in that number. About a third of Americans retire early. If selected, Social Security starts at 62, so there is no relevance there. Starting Medicare coverage at age 65, he was simply a political choice. Political Selection. The correct moral answer to the question of health care reform is apparently the universal traditional Medicare, with 2% overhead compared to 12% marketing/administrative costs for the private sector.
It should also be noted that the current chaotic multi-payer healthcare system results in much higher per capita healthcare costs than single-payer systems. Per capita costs go down under a single payer. The money saved will go to insurance for all Americans.
Under traditional Medicare for All, you have complete freedom to choose your doctor and hospital (as opposed to Medicare Advantage, a commercial PPO/HMO scheme). Doctors are still independent. Congressmen like Cloud get the same care we do.
How can a veteran believe government can’t run anything effectively? Would he rather turn over our military to Blackwater or some other private operator? , isn’t it as complicated as health insurance? Actually, the problem is not government hijacking.
People like this guy (and Cloud and many conservative lawmakers) are simply selfish. my National health insurance system. I deserve it, but you don’t. You can do any program as long as I don’t have to pay for it. Otherwise, let the rattle suffer. Sounds like a modern day “let me eat cake”. And we all know what happened to French royalty.
