The city’s Tempe PRE preschool program was recently honored by Education Forward Arizona for innovation in early learning.
Alderman Randy Keating received the North Star Award on behalf of the city, along with staff from the city’s Department of Education, Careers and Family Services, and James James, Superintendent of Tempe Elementary School District, the program’s educational partner. Dr. Driscoll participated.
The city launched Tempe PRE in August 2017, and since then the program has served approximately 1,700 children ages 3 and 4. Tempe PRE currently operates 11 co-located classrooms on seven Tempe Elementary School campuses.
Studies from both Helios Education Foundation and First Things First show that children who attend Tempe PRE consistently enter kindergarten more prepared for success than their peers who did not attend preschool . Tempe PRE classrooms are part of the statewide First Quality Rating System and continue to be evaluated for quality and high quality standards.
As the children achieve academic success, so does the family.
69% of our families said access to Tempe PRE improved their family’s financial security
68% said enrollment would allow family members to return to work or work more hours
15% reported being able to obtain safe housing
12% return to school or enroll
Tempe PRE’s unique partnership between the city and school district has gained statewide attention, and Tempe PRE has become a model for Flagstaff and Pima County to design their own preschool initiatives.
