The next-generation Qi2 wireless charging standard has been revealed, bringing a major upgrade to the charging system, making it not only easier to charge smartphones and other tech accessories wirelessly, but also more power efficient.

What is Qi2?
Qi2 is the next generation of the Qi wireless charging standard used in smartphones and other consumer technologies, offering charging capabilities without plugging in a cable. The original Qi charging standard is still largely unused, but the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) has big ideas on how to improve the standard.
The biggest change is the use of magnets in Qi2, and more specifically magnetic power profiles. This allows the magnetic wireless charger to snap into place on the back of your smartphone, providing a secure and optimal connection without having to find a ‘sweet spot’. for a wireless charger. We’ve all been there, right?
According to WPC, the availability of wireless charging should boom as the magnetic Qi2 standard opens up the market to “new accessories that cannot be charged using current flat-to-flat devices.”
When was the original Qi standard published?
The first Qi wireless standard was announced in 2008. Since then, the standard has seen some minor improvements, but this is the biggest step forward since the inception of Qi wireless charging.
What is the difference between Qi2 and MagSafe?
At this point, you may have noticed some similarities between the newly announced Qi2 standard and Apple’s own MagSafe technology revealed in the iPhone 12 in 2020. – That’s because Apple was directly involved in the creation of the Qi2 wireless standard.
According to WPC, Apple “provided the basis for building the new Qi2 standard based on MagSafe technology,” but there are various parties working specifically on magnetic power technology.
With that in mind, it’s no surprise that there are many similarities between MagSafe and Qi2. – Both use magnets to provide a safe and power-efficient way to wirelessly connect the charger to your smartphone, offering slightly faster charging speeds than standard Qi.
However, they could be even more different as the technology matures, with WPC claiming the new standard could introduce “substantial future increases in wireless charging speeds.”
As we all know, Apple doesn’t tend to go after fast charging speeds, so that could be a key differentiator as the technology matures.
Which phones support Qi2?
here’s the sad part – No Android smartphone actually supports the new Qi2 standard yet.
Unlike the original Qi charging standard, which took several years to materialize, WPC has confirmed that Qi2 compatible smartphones and chargers are expected to be available by the end of 2023. .
Samsung, Oppo, and maybe Even Apple, but it depends a lot on what the manufacturer has available during the development stage.
This could mean that 2023 flagships like the Samsung Galaxy S23 won’t be able to take advantage of the tech, but for now we’ll have to wait and see.
