Recent findings have found that the prevalence of food allergy (FA) and susceptibility (FS) increases with the severity of atopic dermatitis (AD).
This study was conducted by investigators to assess both bidirectional association and prevalence of FA, FS, and challenge-proven food allergy (CPFA).
The team further set out to determine the effect of AD severity on FA due to frequent co-occurrences and type 2 inflammation.
The study was authored by JP Thyssen, MD, PhD, Department of Dermatology, Bispevia, Copenhagen University Hospital and Fredericksburg.
“The aim of this comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis was to determine the prevalence and bidirectional associations between AD and food sensitivity (FS), FA, and challenge-proven food allergy (CPFA). PubMed and EMBASE were searched, and title/abstract and full-text reviews and data extraction were performed by three independent reviewers. ”
The investigator’s analysis began with searches of PubMed and EMBASE, and three independent reviewers extracted the necessary data.
Their search assessed the prevalence of FA, FS, and/or CPFA and vice versa in AD patients.
They also assessed the association of AD with the three conditions and compared them with reference individuals without AD or other conditions.
The team used it specifically for quantitative analysis, as allergies to milk, peanuts, eggs, wheat, and soy are the most commonly tested.
Researchers were able to use sample size data, binary data, and confidence intervals (CI) to reconstruct primary information for studies lacking primary epidemiological data.
The research team used a total of 557 articles for their analysis. The sample size for this article was 225,568 AD patients and 1,128,322 reference individuals.
They also had a sample size of 1,357,793 patients with FA, FS, or CPFA in the analysis and a total of 1,244,596 reference individuals.
The researchers found a pooled prevalence of FS in AD patients of 48.4% (95% confidence interval (CI): 43.7 – 53.2), prevalence of FA of 32.7% (28.8 – 36.6), and prevalence of reported a rate of 40.7%. For CPFA (34.1 – 47.5).
They found that AD was prevalent in 45.3% (41.4 – 49.3) of patients with FA, 51.2% (46.3 – 56.2) of patients with FS, and 54.9% (47.0 – 62.8) of patients with CPFA among the patients evaluated. I have found that there is a rate .
Overall, researchers noted that, numerically, the prevalence of FS and FA increased with AD.
“The prevalence of FS and FA increased numerically with AD severity,” they wrote. “FS, FA, and CPFA are common comorbidities in AD and are closely related. Physicians should pay attention to this relationship to optimize patient management and treatment strategies.”
