Welcome to February! Here are some great sports facts that happened on this day, February 1st.
super bowl
2004 – The New England Patriots beat the Carolina Panthers by just three points in Super Bowl XXXVIII. His goal on his game-winning 41-yard field was kicked by Adam his Vinatieri with just four seconds left in his game, and the Patriots won his second Super Bowl in three seasons.
The team’s total was 868 yards. Of those, 481 yards were recorded in New England. Among them, the 4th quarter was a particularly high score with a total of 37 points.
2009 – The Pittsburgh Steelers defeat the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII by a final score of 27-23 to secure their sixth Super Bowl victory and become the first team to do so. The game-winning touchdown catch was made by Santonio Holmes with 35 seconds remaining.
2015 – Super Bowl XLIX was played between the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks. Tom Brady threw for four touchdowns. However, Malcolm Butler’s interception in the end zone with 20 seconds left sealed the victory for the Patriots, defeating the Seahawks 28–24 to clinch their fourth Super Bowl title.
NBA
John Stockton, who played for the Utah Jazz, surpassed Magic Johnson’s previous record of 9,921 assists on December 10, 1995 for the most assists in NBA history.
Stockton retired with a total of 15,806 assists, a record he still stands to this day.
tennis
2009 – Rafael Nadal defeated Roger Federer in the final of the Australian Open, winning 7-5, 3-6, 7-6, 3-6, 6-2 in a five-set match. It was Nadal’s first Australian Open title and an important win in his career.
