SmartFit method
The team at SmartFit Method cuts the ribbon for the new Girard Avenue studio.

With a focus on working “smarter, not harder,” SmartFit Method opened a studio at 7863 Girard Ave in December. According to the manager, the idea is to use fitness technology, artificial intelligence and adaptive resistance training to do an hour’s worth of training. Exercise in 20 minutes.

Aiming to open in March, the location of national creative studio Board & Brush will be based at 7463 Girard Ave. (behind the DG Wills bookstore).
Run by La Jolla residents Doug Vocelle and Sam Grissom, the studio offers instructor-led art projects primarily in wood planks in the form of home decor, serving trays, signs and more. Other projects include tote bags, planters and doormats.
“It’s instructor-led, so no art experience is required,” says Vocelle. “This is a social gathering and a fun experience. [Other Board & Brush locations] Dates, girls-only gatherings, sessions with grandparents and grandchildren, parent-child sessions, corporate team building, etc. …take a log and set off with a self-made project.
Bothell and Grissom said they retired from the medical field and wanted to do something creative and run a business in The Village. That way, you can walk to work and be part of the local business community.
They are awaiting a liquor license, which is required for all Bode & Brush franchises before they open.
“There’s a social aspect to it because you have to dry the project, so it’s time for someone to have a soda or a drink,” says Vocelle.

RG Jewelry
RG jewelry will hit the Westfield UTC mall in March.

Also in March, California-based sustainable jewelry brand RG will open at the Westfield UTC mall at 4545 La Jolla Village Drive.
RG was founded by Rachel Karcich in 2014. All jewelry is handcrafted in our Los Angeles studio and our affiliated workshop in New England.
“It’s always been a dream of mine to open a shop in La Jolla,” says Karcich. “From the picturesque cliffs to the beautiful beaches, I have found inspiration in every visit. I have no doubt that the La Jolla community will appreciate and appreciate our excellent craftsmanship. Los Angeles and San Clemente, and we are thrilled to open our third store here.”

After over a decade at 908 Pearl Street, Radha Jiu-Jitsu recently moved to a location that’s nearly twice the size at 7521 Fay Ave.
Owner Rafael Dallinha said, “We were in a very small place and wanted to expand to meet the needs of our students.”We found a new location and eventually closed the deal. So, where before there was no space for parents and they used to congregate outside, now we have a lounge area for parents.”
The new studio will allow Rada to accommodate more students in male, female and children’s classes.
“I have a lot of friends and students who have been here over the years and I am a surfer so I love it here. [and] I really wanted to stay in La Jolla,” Dall’Igna said. “La Jolla brings it all together.”

Jewels by the Sea, which has been operating on Prospect Street for more than 20 years, will close within months after all inventory is sold out.
