Getting your hair done at a black salon is a complicated process that usually takes hours and is filled with conversation and laughter.
Anyone sitting under the dryer or waiting for the silk press, like client Jewel Worrell, has a story to tell.
“I’m a former New Yorker,” she explained. “I like pizza, Chinese food, and bagels.”
And Worrell says he didn’t realize he had high blood pressure until he met Dr. Terry Richardson in a salon chair.
“When I first met her, she made me think about what I should do, how I should proceed medically, and what I should discuss with my doctor,” she said.
For the past 11 years, Richardson has used salon health programs through the Colorado Black Health Collaborative to help the Black community address health issues, including mental health.
She and her staff are helpful in providing basic checks and education to everyone in the store. To make that happen, she’s partnered with Denver’s hair salons and barbershops along and around Colfax.
“Clients really think it’s a great place to come here and meet them where they are,” Richardson said. I’d rather be in space.”
Hair salon Winning Coiffures on Colfax’s 6000 block is one of 14 participating shops.
Owner Rosalyn Redwine says, “When they come in, doctors, RNs, experienced guys can come in and give advice if needed.” It is what keeps us alive by knowing our numbers.”
Additionally, Robinson provides stylists and barbers with tools to help their clients assert themselves.
“I helped[my client]understand a little bit where her stress was coming from,” says stylist Lena Redwine. I wasn’t very enthusiastic about it, but I enjoyed it.”
Mykhal Goodloe, senior owner of a Hollywood barber shop just down the street, can attest to how much the program has empowered its visitors. He sees people walk away feeling as good as they look.
“There were people who crossed the line of stroke, and they were able to have that blessing at the time,” Goodrow said. In a few years it feels like everyone has a bit of PTSD they have a lot to talk about and they feel comfortable with us and we can help them .Relax.”
He continued, “There are so many people without medical care that there are benefits for everyone. Resources are key.”
