The Presidential Lecture Series on Justice, Equity, and Inclusion will bring in-house and third-party experts to join UHD in 2021 to discuss key topics facing today’s campus community. A key component of the series was “to build a more equitable and equitable environment through grant-supported and student-led outreach.” To that end, all college students are encouraged to provide support and resources to design community programs that focus on race, economic, and social justice issues that affect members of the UHD student population, You have been invited to submit proposals for Justice, Equity and Inclusion Mini-Grants. In her senior year at the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, she plans to graduate in May 2023 with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology with minors in Communication and Critical Race Theory. In her “free” time, she managed to amass a list of her upcoming activities and accomplishments.
- She has coordinated and presented several events for the UHD community, including “Black State of Mind” (Fall 2019), which promoted mental health in the African American community. “Saving Superwoman” (Spring 2021), discussing “Superwoman Syndrome”. and “Black Women’s Empowerment Brunch (Spring 2020).”
- She has held positions in various organizations on campus. texas rising; president active mindDirector of Health and Wellness at ; student council; vice president Black Student Association.
- She has been a Gator Peer Mentor since Fall 2019 and has been an Assistant Instructor for two years.
- She is the current President of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. – Omicron Gamma Chapter and holds the highest regional position an undergraduate can hold within the sorority.
- She is a member of several honors societies including the Honors Program, Alpha Lambda Delta, and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars.
- She was named 2019-2020 Star to Watch by the League of Women Voters in Houston and has represented UHD in proceedings such as the Humanities Education and Research Association (HERA) conference.
Being active seems to be in Youngs’ DNA, starting with his role in a family of nine siblings. “I have always been a prominent and caring person in my family and have witnessed firsthand how mental health affects lives, both directly and indirectly,” she said. Her desire to stigmatize led her to apply for a student-led Success & Equity mini-grant to support projects on this topic.

Youngs used a mini-grant to fund an event called “Gators Against Mental Health Stigmas.” Originally planned as a series of events for her National Mental Illness Awareness Week in October, Youngs turned the project into what she called “Mental Health Mondays,” giving her the ability to adapt. showed. The Mental Health Mondays meeting brought students and staff together to listen and learn. Youngs brought her considerable research and resources, including mental health professionals within the sorority, and sought support from student counseling services. was asked to demonstrate a commitment to destigmatizing mental health.

Youngs explained that her mental health activism is a deeply ingrained passion. “My goal after graduation is to complete my PhD. I want to bridge the gap between social work and psychology. I want to create community centers with mental health clinics in low-income communities,” she says. “I advocate for public engagement and believe that direct participation can improve the environment. , reflected what my efforts were not only needed but also desired: “I would love to see UHD do more when it comes to mental health awareness and education. My ultimate goal before leaving UHD is to share my love of college success with as many students as possible.”
