American Express and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced an upgrade coming to Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) with plans for a new 17,000-square-foot Centurion Lounge. Amex operates its signature lounge at both New York’s Kennedy (JFK) and LaGuardia (LGA) airports, so this rounds out the collection at all three major airports in the New York area.
The new Centurion Lounge is planned for Terminal A and scheduled to open in 2026.
“The new Terminal A is the first step in a renaissance for Newark Liberty International Airport,” said Port Authority Chairman Kevin O’Toole. “The addition of the Centurion Lounge, with its stunning architecture, incredible amenities and a celebration of New Jersey’s rich history throughout will be a fitting capstone to an already world-class facility.”
What Sets Centurion Lounges Apart?
Centurion Lounges are known for their premium amenities, and this lounge will follow suit. A 1,400-square-foot indoor terrace with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Manhattan skyline and airport runways will anchor the space. In a nod to New Jersey’s vibrant jazz history, guests will be treated to live music in a piano lounge and cocktail bar inspired by jazz favorites. Patrons will be able to learn more about New Jersey’s history and culture by browsing antiques and artifacts in the lounge’s own archival collection.
Like other Centurion Lounges, this location will feature locally-inspired menus, a variety of seating options including dedicated workspaces and high-speed Wi-Fi throughout. The lounge will include specially-designed spaces for families with small children and shower suites to freshen up before departing. Many lounges offer free food or snacks, but Centurion Lounges are known for quality meals, snacks and drinks.
How To Get Into a Centurion Lounge
Access to Centurion Lounges is a benefit for Platinum and Centurion Cardmembers. That includes the following cards:
Cardholders must present a same-day boarding pass, qualifying Amex card and I.D. to gain access.
Access to Centurion Lounges is one thing, but actually getting into one can be a challenge. If you’ve visited a Centurion Lounge in recent months or years, you may have been met with long lines and crowds overwhelming the space. Amex made efforts to curtail this issue by no longer allowing free guest entrance with cardholders unless they spent heavily on the card, along with increased annual and authorized user fees. Time will tell how much these changes alleviate the pressure Centurion Lounges are experiencing.
Other Lounge Options at EWR
If 2026 feels like a long time to wait, we’re with you. There are no Priority Pass lounges at EWR, but for premium Amex cardholders flying Delta or Lufthansa, lounge options are available. Delta operates a Sky Club in Terminal A, and Lufthansa operates a Business Lounge and Senator Lounge in Terminal B. Both require guests to show their valid same-day departing boarding pass and physical Amex card.
Bottom Line
While the Newark airport isn’t known for lounge offerings or opulence in general, the Centurion Lounge is part of recent efforts to bring more comfortable spaces to travelers. Air Canada recently completed renovations to a Maple Leaf Lounge co-located inside a United Club in Terminal A. And last year, United opened a massive 30,000-square-foot lounge in Terminal C—its largest in the country.
For those who may not have airline status or access to other lounges, the Centurion Lounge will be a fantastic respite from ever-growing crowds at EWR—one that’s worth the wait.
