On the day of my journey, I arrived at Northern Colorado Regional Airport about 25 minutes before my bus’ scheduled departure. If you’re not checking bags, you could potentially cut it closer—but not too close; Buses depart promptly at the scheduled hour which means you’ll need to load your bags and find a seat in advance. Similar to flying, they won’t wait for delayed passengers.
Passengers need to check-in inside the small airport at the United counter by providing your name and identification. If you’re checking bags, you can do this here (cutoff is 15 minutes prior to scheduled departure). Bags will be tagged to your final destination, which means you can bypass the potentially long lines at Denver International Airport.
There’s no TSA or other security inside the terminal. For now, the Landline bus operates “landside” which means it’s completely outside of a secure area. Passengers will go through standard airport security upon arrival in Denver.
About 10 minutes before departure, an announcement was made that passengers could board the bus.
Carry-on bags were loaded below the bus, though there are small overhead compartments that would fit a small backpack or laptop bag if you’d prefer to keep it with you. Checked bags were handled by United personnel.
Onboard, I found comfortable leather seats arranged in a 1-2 configuration. I sat on the passenger side of the aisle in a single seat for more privacy. The driver’s side had sets of two seats which would be great for someone traveling with a companion. Nearly all rows feature 36” of pitch, which is a few extra inches of legroom compared to standard economy seating on a plane.
Passengers took their seats and we left precisely on time. I settled in for the trip, happy to see a tray table and power outlet at my seat that made it easy to work during the journey. Free wifi is also available. Like the local cellular network, it started out weak but got stronger and faster as we got closer to Denver. If you’d rather not work, you can also access free movies, books, audiobooks and games with your own device onboard.
The trip is blocked at 60-75 minutes long (depending on the time of day), though in reality the bus is just as subject to highway traffic as any other vehicle. On my midday trip, we actually arrived about 10 minutes early, but I wouldn’t count on that when traveling this stretch of interstate.
Some, but not all, buses have small washrooms in the back. If you notice you’re booked on one of the smaller shuttles rather than a full-size bus, you’ll want to use a restroom before you leave instead.
