Now, let’s talk about how you can actually use Wix in a step-by-step guide.
Step 1: Getting Started
Choose the type of website that you are creating to access the most common templates available for that niche. You’ll be able to start without giving credit card information, which is a bonus.
Step 2: Sign Up for an Account
Wix will ask you to sign up for an account by entering your email and a password or by logging in using Google or Facebook.
Step 3: Follow the Prompts
You’ll be asked a few questions about the website and your goal. Wix uses AI to help expedite the process. You have the option to use AI or to work solo. The AI bot goes through a series of questions to help understand what your website is about. When it’s done, it will prompt you to go to the dashboard to start building the site.
Step 4: Set Up the Business
This section has seven parts. It will start with choosing a domain name. The first part of this will already have been completed thanks to the AI bot. Remember to find a domain name that is easy to remember, spell and type out. You don’t want people to end up on another website by accident.
Step 5: Choose a Template
When you’ve completed the setup, you’ll have the domain purchased and a business email connected to your website. From there, you’ll want to choose a template for your website. Wix lays out dozens of options for you to click on and take a deeper look at and preview. In preview mode, you can click on the different types of pages the site has and see if it fits your needs. When you find a template that matches the vibe of your website, select it to upload it to your dashboard by clicking the “edit” button in the top-right corner.
Step 6: Update Text and Images
When you’re in the edit mode of the website, you’ll see lines delineating the website into fourths. On the page will be boxes for text and images. Click on a box to highlight it and change the text to fit your company’s needs. An editor pop-up will appear that helps you customize the text so you can make it an H1, H2, paragraph or more. It also allows you to customize the font style and to italicize or bold certain words in the text. You can move the text to a new location on the page by clicking on it, holding it and dragging it to a new location. It’s as easy as that.
Step 7: Add Images
Wix has a library of thousands of images that you can choose from, or you can upload your own. You may want to use Wix’s library for royalty-free stock images while uploading your own logo and proprietary images. To access the image library, click on an image on the page and choose “Change Image.” This will populate the image library where you can use Wix’s or upload your own. Once images are uploaded, simply drag them to the location where you want them to be. You may need to resize certain images and can easily do this by dragging the corners of the image while it is in the editor.
Step 8: Change Background
You may want to change the background color of your website to match the color scheme of your company. Find the icon called “Site Design” found on the left-hand sidebar. Click on it to get the option to change the color or image of the background. When it comes to color changes, Wix will offer you templated design colors, or you can choose your own to completely customize the look of your website.
Step 9: Add Pages
Most websites are more than just a homepage. Wix makes it easy to add pages to complete the website. On the top left-hand menu is a little carrot next to Pages: Home. Select that and then choose “Manage Pages” to then have a menu of page types to add. Follow the same steps to customize each page with text and images.
Step 10: Add a Blog or E-Commerce Store
In the left-hand sidebar, there is a “+” icon. This will allow you to add other general components to your website, such as a blog or a store. Select the icon and follow the prompts to add a blog or a store. The new feature will open up, and you can start writing a blog or adding merchandise to the store with a few easy clicks.
Step 11: Use SEO Tools
Wix has internal SEO tools that help you rank your page on search engines. While these tools are not as robust as some other website builders, you want to make sure to utilize them to get the most traction you can on the internet.
On the left sidebar, select “Menus and Pages” and then click on the ellipse. This will open up a drop-down menu where you can choose SEO Basics for each page and update the descriptions and keywords. Do this for every page.
