Mexican billionaire Ricardo Salinas Priego’s businesses paid out more than 2.8 billion pesos ($140 million) in tax credits, President Andrés Manuel Lopez Obrador said Friday.
Lopez Obrador said at a press conference that the payment was made in accordance with the decision of the Supreme Court of Mexico.
Big-name firms Grupo Salinas and TV Azteca have been accused by tax authorities of owing billions of pesos in unpaid taxes to combat payments that were partly linked to costs omitted from 2013. Engaged in a lengthy legal battle.
Lopez Obrador said last month that the state would audit dozens of domestic and international companies it said had billions of dollars in debt as part of a pledge to crack down on tax evaders in office.
Salinas conglomerate Grupo Salinas and its subsidiary Television Azteca are not included in that list, he said, as separate agreements are sought.
Salinas admitted to paying.
“I kept my promise and my company paid what they said taxes,” he tweeted on Friday.
