Pirates ride to 64-37 win from 20-2 start as part of Saturday’s 7-game event

CEDAR RAPIDS – There’s been a bit of speculation about which school could be the 16th member of the River Valley Conference.
There are currently 15, which means uneven splitting and scheduling issues. 16 looks like a perfect even number.
So let’s start with Albanet and throw some potential additions in there for fun.
It is a school where enrollment is likely to increase for various reasons. This is roughly the size of most schools in the RVC and league geographic footprint.
And best of all, we have excellent athletics, including men’s basketball. The Pirates played a near-perfect first quarter in the Wells Fargo Advisors Shootout at Cor College on Saturday afternoon, beating the Cascades 64-37.
This is the second-best team Albertnet has beaten by a wide margin this season in the River Valley Conference. Dyersville Beckman was the first.
“We all really wanted that,” said Albanett junior guard Jordan Caton. We knew what we had to do, get off to a great start and shoot good as always.”
There is good shooting and then there is burn shooting. Albertnett, ranked 7th in Class 2A (11-1), fired his first six with 3:29 left in the first quarter to take a 20-2 lead.
The 12-0 start included all five Pirates starters scoring points. Cascade (9-4) is traditionally known for his 2-3 zone defense, which makes it very difficult for opponents to find shots.
That was not the case here. Albert nett deftly moved the basketball and hit her shot open which was generated.
“A lot of us were making a lot of shots,” said Albanett’s Braydon Osborne. “I think we just kept having the confidence to keep shooting and just having fun.

“Just find an open zone. Just relax and take what they give you.”
Of course, Caton and Osborne finished with 15 points each to longtime member of the Tri Rivers conference, Albert Nett. Mason Neighbor added 12 and Adam Neighbor added 10.
The Pirates didn’t feel like they played particularly well in their victory over Ed-Co on Friday night, so it was a boon to be back so quickly a few hours later.
“No, we didn’t play well on defense. Osborne didn’t shoot very well offensively,” he said. “It felt good just to flash it and move on to this game.”
“I knew I couldn’t play against a team like this again,” Caton said.
Cole McDermott scored 13 points to lead the Cascade. The Cougars have come here on a five-game winning streak.
The annual event featured seven games on Saturday. Durant won his 58-45 victory over Mediapolis on Saturday morning while his No. 6 Dunkerton in Class 1A beat Central City 57-40.
Another Rank 1A team, No. 10 Bellevue Marquette, doubled Don Bosco 62-31. Linn-Mar beat Cedar Rapids Prairie 57-54 in a Mississippi Valley Conference team-to-team match, and was considered a non-conference game that didn’t count toward the MVC standings.
Ames defeated Class 4A No. 10 Pleasant Valley 33-31 defensively. Iowa City Liberty gave Fairfield a 77–49 win that he closed out the shootout.
