European Union regulators said on Tuesday that Amazon made drastic changes to its business practices to resolve an antitrust investigation that found the e-commerce giant had an unfair advantage over rival merchants. agreed to do so.
Amazon has promised to give products from rival sellers equal visibility in its “buy box,” according to the EU’s executive committee.
The company also promised to stop using “private data” from independent sellers on its platform to provide insights about its products to compete with those sellers. We also agreed not to discriminate against sellers in Prime member services and to allow Prime members the freedom to choose shipping services.
The agreement will allow Amazon to avoid a legal battle with the EU’s top antitrust watchdog, which could have resulted in huge fines worth up to 10% of its annual global sales.
“We are pleased to have addressed the European Commission’s concerns and resolved these issues,” Amazon said in a prepared statement.
The agreement applies only to Amazon’s business practices in Europe and follows concessions the company filed in July to settle two EU antitrust investigations. Under the agreement announced Tuesday, Amazon has improved on its original proposal.
