SAULT STE. Marie — On Tuesday, December 20, the Soot Tribe of Chippewa Indians formally swore in Austin Lowes as chief of the tribe.
After a special election on December 7, Lowes officially assumed the chairmanship. He will end his term as former Payments chairman Aaron, who resigned in May following a vote of no confidence in his board. Lowes will serve until the end of his original term on Payment in June 2024.

Other board positions have changed now that former vice chairman Lawes has taken over as new chairman. Director Tyler LaPlant is the new Vice Chairman, Isaac McKenchey is the new Treasurer, and Kim Hampton is the new Secretary.

“Thank you for trusting in my leadership abilities and my ability to hold the tribe together,” Lowes said at the swearing-in reception.
