Since opening in 2017, the patio of Detroit Street Filling Station has been filled with plants, people and music. This Kerrytown staple has been recognized as Ann Arbor’s Best Vegan/Vegetarian Food two years in a row.
Following in the footsteps of its predecessor The Lunch Room, which won the same award in 2018 and 2019, Detroit Street Filling Station offers customers a dedicated vegan menu seven days a week. The restaurant incorporates fresh vegetables into its dishes through partnerships with local businesses such as the Ann Arbor Farmers Market and Ypsilanti-based Dawn Farms.
From fan-favorite Pad Thai to flavorful Southwest salads, Detroit Street Filling Station has something for everyone, even the most die-hard meat eaters. For us, Buffalo Cauliflower Wings are the perfect appetizer for any occasion.
But for founder and owner Phillis Engelbert, vegan cuisine isn’t central to Detroit Street Filling Station. Rather, what Engelbert values most is the personal and professional development of his staff.
“We have several employees who came to us immediately after treatment and are now in management positions. I’m here. “We have other employees who came from prisons and homeless shelters and treatment and are now students at (college)…that’s the best part. Seeing our staff succeed.” It is.”
According to Engelbert, the Detroit Street Filling Station feels an obligation to give back to the community that has embraced the restaurant with open arms by feeding and raising money for those in need.
“I just did[a fundraiser]for hurricane relief in Puerto Rico,” said Engelbart. “At the height of the pandemic, we gave out a lot of free meals and groceries, and he partnered with TeaHaus on our school lunch program. I have.”
Despite constant construction, Engelbart said the Detroit Street Filling Station will continue to serve its own menu for patrons for years to come with its recently reopened indoor seating. says.
“We have a welcoming and engaging culture for both patrons and staff,” said Engelbart. “We want everyone to feel comfortable coming here, regardless of race, gender, or sexual orientation…there are diverse people who eat here and work here. , I really love that people can be happy with who they are.”
