Indianapolis — A 16-foot-wide, nearly one-foot-deep pothole is wreaking havoc on Forrest Avenue. It is one of more than 2,500 pothole complaints received by the Department of Public Works in his first 31 days this year.
“This has been an ongoing problem for several years,” said Vick Clifton, owner of AACI General Contractors.
Clifton owns a business on Forrest Avenue and has to drive across this eastern Indy dip many times a day.
“I made a lot of calls because it’s very serious,” Clifton said.
Clifton said it has been a problem for three years. He added that he even paid out of pocket to soften the blow.
“We filled it with gravel last year,” Clifton said.
Other companies have even had their cars damaged.
“We’ve removed the front air dams from a few small cars,” said Ray Wallis.
Wallis also works at Nelbud Services Group’s Forest Avenue. He and Clifton called the Department of Public Works, but they both said nothing was done.
“I understand there’s a lot going on, but these are engulfing the vehicle,” Wallis said.
Giant potholes aren’t the only eyesore on the streets of Indianapolis.
“As of this morning, we have received 2,652 pothole complaints this year,” said Imani Keith.
Keith, a spokesperson for Indy DPW, said the agency has completed 961 of those service requests.
“DPW always has a crew out when the weather permits,” said Keith.
Currently, the holes are only filled with temporary fixes.
“Early in the winter, crews use cold mix to fill potholes, but it doesn’t bond with existing pavement like hot mix does,” Keith said.
Keith said secondary roads like Forest Avenue will be dealt with later.
“Towards midseason, we’ll start focusing on those secondary streets,” he said.
