OCTOBER 20, 2022 — Just as the famous fictional “Holmes” tenaciously worked to solve the case, SDSC’s Sherlock Cloud Solutions and Services Division (Sherlock) is committed to transforming cyber infrastructure and cloud computing into a reality for people. We are working steadfastly to solve the mystery that can present and deploy the division’s serve.
With a unique array of professionals who apply their unique and keen skills to the services and solutions offered by the division, “Sherlock” is well positioned to serve the SDSC community, the University of California, external academic and research institutions, and industry partners.
Sandeep Chandra, division executive director, said: “We have organized entire groups within the division to support these key areas.”
These groups are:
- Cloud architecture and DevOps
- cloud infrastructure
- Data architecture and platform
- Cybersecurity and compliance
- Outreach and user support
Specifically, Sherlock is currently partnering with UC San Diego Information Technology Services (ITS) to develop and deploy a Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) hosting solution across Microsoft Azure Gov Cloud and Office365 GCC High.
“This solution is the first of its kind within the UC system and will serve on-campus research organizations, other UC campuses, and institutions across the country,” said Chandra.
Sherlock also works extensively with various federal agencies, including the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the National Science Foundation (NSF), and the Department of Defense (DoD). Through collaboration with these institutions, Sherlock provides secure, compliant, end-to-end solutions to support many critical applications, including cancer research, decoding the human immune system, and detecting and preventing medical fraud. has deployed a number of cyber infrastructure solutions for
Leslie Morsek, who leads Sherlock’s outreach efforts and contributes to program development, said the department is nimble with technology, applications, and underlying platforms, while keeping innovative and modern solutions in mind. , said it allows them to grow with ever-changing technology, regulations and unique partner requirements. Sherlock combines this operation with ensuring data security and privacy.
“Traditionally, Sherlock has focused on compliance and security of customer data,” Morsek said. “While this has always been at the forefront of Sherlock’s initiatives, we recognize the additional challenges customers face with adopting a cloud platform, including learning curves, coordinating the vast array of resources and tools involved, and reducing costs. Parameters: Sherlock minimizes these challenges by providing the ability to automate the deployment, integration, and operations of complex applications while optimizing the cost of cloud resources consumed .”
According to Morsek, innovation comes from Sherlock Division’s firm beliefs. “These platforms are not only highly secure and innovative, but also offer value-added capabilities to address new areas of research and development such as machine learning, artificial intelligence and data analytics.”
According to Winston Armstrong, who heads the Security and Compliance Group, Sherlock has in many ways helped SDSC to be recognized as a national leader in high-performance, data-intensive computing and cyber infrastructure.
“Sherlock is rooted in cloud, cybersecurity and regulatory compliance knowledge and expertise. We provide HIPAA, FISMA and Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) compliant computing, data management and application hosting services. We built and deployed Sherlock Cloud, which provides a path to public cloud adoption and migration for regulatory compliance workloads with a solution that incorporates Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure (Azure), and Google Cloud Platform (GCP). provide to partners.
“This is a necessary first step in familiarizing ourselves with the key features of GCP, AWS, and Azure and extending the usefulness of these features,” said Armstrong. “This familiarity has allowed us to identify the strengths of each of these cloud platforms and map the use case to the appropriate, targeted cloud platform so that we can offer our customers the best cloud solutions.” intend to do something.”
Eric Odell, one of Sherlock’s senior cloud architects, noted that Sherlock continues to partner with UC Risk Services to build innovative solutions that leverage the cloud and modern data management tools. .
“As custodians of data across the university’s systems, it is our responsibility to continually explore options for managing data securely, more economically, with greater flexibility and scalability. Services offered by commercial cloud service providers such as AWS have become a viable option for managing data consistent with our mission tenets described above.Through strong partnerships with Sherlock and its partners, Leverage each team’s core competencies to successfully implement a modern, cloud-based, highly secure data management platform that serves as a comprehensive, strategic, and forward-looking approach to data management. “It’s been a long time coming,” said Odell.
Morsek said Sherlock is a UC Center for Excellence in Regulatory Data Management Services as a result of its innovation and superior solutions.
“In addition, we are one of the few academic institutions operating this capability as a service for other academic institutions, government agencies, research institutions and industry partners,” she said.
Sherlock is committed to excellence and innovation in providing our partners with highly secure, compliant, versatile and effective solutions to meet their research needs. Sherlock recognizes the importance of intangible assets: team members and the customer service they provide.
“The Sherlock team is made up of individuals with diverse expertise and talents, each making an impactful contribution to Sherlock, its partners, and those who indirectly benefit from the deployed solutions. “We have an unwavering commitment. This teamwork and customer service mindset is exceptional and has contributed to the success of Sherlock and its partners,” said Chandra. “At Sherlock, we value purpose, mastery, and autonomy. We are proud to see everyone on our team experience these core values.”
