BUFFALO (WKBW) — What was supposed to be the trip of a lifetime. An Italian adventure for 7 News Sports Director Matt Bove and a few of his family. Those plans were quickly discontinued.
“A 13-day trip to Italy turned into a 3-day trip to Italy and a 10-day quarantine,” Bove told 7 News anchor Jeff Russo.
Early on in the trip, Covid ripped half of Matt’s travel group apart. After testing positive, he had to quarantine in his 100-square-foot hotel room in Florence, with limited Wi-Fi and his mother.
“Kizuna is a word you can use,” Matt said with a smile, hearing his mother laugh in the background. “I don’t like you more than I do,” he cried.
“I’m ready to lose it,” Matt added.
Trying to salvage things, Matt’s wife and the rest of the group headed to Venice while she stayed with her mother to recuperate. The two had to complete mandatory quarantine in Italy and return to Buffalo immediately. The only saving grace in all this. travel insurance.
“It looks like it’s worth it,” Matt said. “We hope some will come back.”
Renee Pilley, senior travel consultant for WNY’s AAA, said travel insurance has become much more popular since the start of the pandemic.
“I think 90% of the people that sit with us are most interested in getting travel insurance prices and quotes from the start,” says Pilley.
According to the American Travel Insurance Association, the cost of travel insurance is based on three factors.
- where you go.
- travel period
- Age of policyholder
According to Business Insider and insurance agency “Square Mouth,” the average travel insurance costs $248, or about 10% of the total cost of the trip.
“This is medical-based insurance. It covers slander, sickness and death,” said Pilley. “We can cover travel delays, trip interruptions, baggage delays, and medical and dental emergencies.”
Many travel insurance policies now also cover Covid-19 related issues such as medical expenses and accommodation if you get sick while traveling.
It’s a safety net against the unexpected and our friend Matt is happy to have, even though he’s disappointed with the trip gone awry.
“I think this can happen to anyone. Travel insurance is definitely worth it if you’re trying to make your trip feel like it.”
