However, the retailer plans to add more partners in the future, said his vice president and chief health equity officer, Dr. Jones Khaldun, at CVS Health.
“It has been very important for us to partner with organizations that are already important pillars and service providers in underserved communities…these are the first partners of the Alliance and we will continue to move forward.” We look forward to learning as we go and adding future partners,” Haldun said in an interview.
Each partnership will focus on different goals in their respective communities. Here’s a breakdown of the collaborations:
Sinai Chicago: The partnership with Sinai Chicago will focus on Chicago’s North Lawndale neighborhood and provide local residents with health resources specifically for heart health and mental health. Sinai Chicago will also recruit locals to become community healthcare workers through the Block Leader Program. These workers help connect residents with health information and resources.
Meharry Medical College: CVS Health and Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee are working together to increase the diversity of health care workers in their community. The two organizations recruit and train workers who partner with faith-based or community-based organizations to provide health education and connect communities to health resources. Meharry also offers educational programs to train health professionals to work with organizations in underserved communities.
Wayne State University: CVS Health has partnered with the Wayne State University Center for Health Equity and Community Knowledge in Urban Populations (CHECK-UP) to improve community engagement and training in Detroit. They form coalitions with community members to help build initiatives aligned with community needs, with a focus on heart health and mental health. The partnership will also train faculty, staff, and community members on community-involved research.
Through the alliance, Haldun hopes to expand its workforce and gain insight into health disparities in underserved communities.
“Each of our partners in the alliance will help expand training and access to local health workers,” she said. “It is also about understanding the local drivers of health disparities as a company, with a particular focus on heart health and mental health. to close the gap between the health and mental health of the population.”
