A Democratic political group has released a new ad that attempts to inspire younger voters by highlighting President Biden’s student debt forgiveness program, but audiences mock it.
A group called Build Back Together uses this ad in their “Six Figures” campaign. It opens with a clip of MSNBC host Shepard Smith saying the White House is “starting an effort to forgive student loan debt.” The screen then appears to glitch and Smith repeats the word “debt” over and over before the beat kicks in and the meme starts spraying the entire scene.
“New ad: Dark Brandon strikes again!” Read the tweet from the organization announcing the ad.
“Biden just delivered a historic student debt relief. [bag of cash emoji] We can put it back in the pockets of borrowers across the country and eliminate student debt entirely for one in four Black borrowers and nearly half of Latino borrowers,” they wrote.
Republicans say Democrats will ‘pay the price’ in midterm elections to pass big appropriations bill
The clip shows Biden with laser beam eyes before flashing “Student Aid.Gov” on the screen.
“Millions of Americans earning less than $125,000 a year can now get much-needed relief through this easy online form that takes less than five minutes to complete,” said Daniel Melfi, executive director of Building Back Together. (Danielle Melfi) said in a statement.
“This is a game-changer for so many young Americans, putting more money in their pockets to start a family, start a business, or buy a home. I congratulate you on this victory and thank you for your commitment to the President to get it done,” she added.
Internet audiences, however, quickly mocked the 30-second clip.
Journalist Dave Weigel has this to say about advertising:
“Whatever this is, we’re going to take a baby boomer rap grandma ad,” wrote Town Hall’s Kevin McMahon.
“[That face when] Your consultant’s brain has been marinated in the internet for so long that you don’t even know who you’re talking to,” writes political commentator Liam Donovan.

The ad is another attempt by Democrats to reframe Biden as “Dark Brandon” in early August.
Members of Biden’s own administration have shared images of him shooting red laser beams from his eyes to make the president look “edgy.”
