Which cafe chain holds the hegemony?

Boston and Cambridge are full of rivalries, but I consider Flour vs. Tatte to be the ultimate and the one I’ve debated the most. I found myself a slightly frightened freshman (who happens to be the number one foodie) who had just arrived at MIT from Jersey. More about spending quality time with friends. Food has an amazing ability to bring people together and lift the spirits of an entire group of stressed college students.
I first discovered and experienced the infamous goodness of Joanne Chang’s Flour Bakery when I went on a recruitment drive with the Women’s Lightweight Crew team in September 2021. (I’m a foodie, but raw tomatoes have always been a food I can’t stand. My favorite celebrity couple and make up my favorite celebrity couple spotted together in Tatte, Boston.) I was sure that if you liked Tom Holland and Zendaya, you would like me too.
When I moved into a dorm, became a full-time Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) student, and became a Boston resident, I was curious to know which bakery chain reigned supreme. I was delighted to discover Flour is located just minutes from campus. This made it very convenient to grab another chopped Greek salad and earn flour reward points quickly. After seeing him declare Flour’s Sticky Sticky Bun to be one of the best things he’s ever eaten, I knew I had to try it.
After taking a bite of warm glutinous bread with an iced pumpkin spice latte and a breakfast egg sandwich (no tomatoes, of course), I fell in love with the cozy taste of homemade and the sensations I derive from the gooey, sweet nutty pastries. . This coziness is directly reflected in what I believe to be Flour’s unique atmosphere. The enchanting sight of freshly baked pastries stacked behind glass and the intoxicating aroma of freshly pressed paninis contribute to Flour’s unique ambience, making cooking feel like home. can do.
On the other hand, once you enter Tatte, you can’t help but fall in love with its aesthetics and the minimalist feel of the interior. Like Flour, you are immediately greeted by the incredible sight of pastries, breads, and Jersualem bagels that look like rectangular sesame bagels. It has a laminated menu. This is because food is brought out to customers that is served from a back kitchen that is not open to the rest of the cafe.
Visited Back Bay Tatte which was incredibly spacious, clean and magnificent. Crossing the bridge into Back Bay takes just over 20 minutes, longer than Flower in Central Square, but well worth it.
My father and I tried the prosciutto and scrambled egg plate, served with homemade sourdough and perfectly soft scrambled eggs. But what really made the best first impression was the bacon, potato and mushroom shakshuka, also served with sourdough. Rather, it has a creamy potato base, perfect for dipping in bread on a cold day. To round out my breakfast, I tried the House Halva Latte and the Pumpkin Latte, a version of the Pumpkin Spice Latte. Both drinks were perfectly balanced with just the right amount of milk foam on top. It offers something like a more luxurious breakfast, lunch or brunch experience.
While the MIT vs. Harvard rivalry has a clear winner in mind, the battle between Flour and Tatte cannot be judged with confidence. Flour’s rewards program, the app’s ability to pre-order and the convenient location made it an initial winner, but after visiting Tatte and falling in love with its minimalist, more upmarket atmosphere and diverse menu But this indecision may be exactly what keeps the rivalry going.
