Elmont, Pennsylvania (KDKA) – It really is possible that the next few months will stress your local food banks to the limit.
Those who benefit from SNAP are coming to an end. Extra emergency monthly payment in COVID timesThis could mean more customers for local food banks and pantries.
Additional payments are due to end in February. Since 2020, many people in the program have relied on that extra amount to support their families. When that emergency food budget is lost, people in need face rising food prices, and food banks become a lifeline to feed their families.
Inflation is also hitting food banks. Food banks are donating less and paying higher costs to stock their shelves.
“In the 2000s, fundraising represented 10% of the budget,” Westmoreland Food Bank CEO Jennifer Miller told KDKA-TV. “We are currently over 60-70% of our budget. We are already getting calls from people worried about what this will look like in March.”
