Bass Pro Shops founder Johnny Morris, Missouri’s richest man, has increased his fortune this past year, joining the 100 richest Americans on the annual Forbes 400 list.
Morris is the 96th richest American with an estimated net worth of $7.5 billion, according to the publication’s list released this week. She has moved up more than 30 places in the rankings, and last year she ranked 134th with an estimated net worth of $6.9 billion.
Almost all of Morris’ wealth comes from his role as founder and CEO of Bass Pro Shops, a Springfield-based outdoor gear retailer with $6.5 billion in annual sales, according to the list. .
Morris has increased his fortune by more than half a billion, but his improvement in his fortune on the list may be due to the decline in the fortunes of other American billionaires. It’s the first time since the Great Recession that America’s ultra-rich are less wealthy than they were a year ago, amid rising inflation and falling markets.

As a sporting goods retailer, Morris seems to have weathered the losses seen by tech billionaires and his personal fortune has risen to unprecedented heights.
The list also tracks the level of philanthropy. Despite his prominent conservationism, Forbes gives Morris a score of 2 out of 5 for his philanthropy.
