Detroit (WXYZ) — This year is National News Literacy Week. From Jan. 23 through Jan. 27, he will urge news consumers to stop the flood of misinformation and learn how to identify credible news through a series of articles.
In broadcast journalism, collecting and distributing news is a team effort, employing the expertise of many people within the newsroom. From news directors to reporters to editors, getting news to your audience is a process that requires a lot of planning, testing and execution.
The news director is the leader of the newsroom. They develop, manage, and implement editorial strategies to reach news consumers across multiple platforms while most effectively achieving company goals and managing all news personnel working within the station. I am in charge.
“We take seriously what’s happening in the Detroit subway and in our community. That way we dig deeper and this can be seen in the people we hire — Diversity of people, not just in race and religion, but in beliefs and thought processes. A story that’s gone wrong or largely ignored, and if we don’t have the right staff to talk to about it, we won’t know about it or report it.
The News Director works closely with newsroom executives, including the Digital News Director, Executive Producers, and News Desk Managers, to plan and execute the news strategy.

Verifying information is at the heart of each step of the editorial process and is the responsibility of everyone in the newsroom.
“People have their own opinions about things, but it’s about discovering facts and understanding those facts. We have certain ideas about things based on what we’ve been exposed to, but journalists, myself included, need to understand what their biases are so they can analyze them effectively. You move around them and through them in order to get to the heart of the story, and to me that mind is what the actual facts are, and when you find those facts, what the story is about. It’s people who talk from all sides, not just from both sides,” Oliphant said.
Judging is different for each story type. Just ask Yve Jones, he’s WXYZ’s Assignment Desk Manager.
“For emails from local governments and agencies, the review usually ends there because we’re getting the information from the source itself,” says Jones. Make additional phone calls or emails to verify the accuracy of your information. The first step in this process is usually a call from a tipster or agent. to determine if the information is valid. Then proceed to the next step.Determine if there are any crew members available to go to the scene for further review. Continue, then they will ask you additional questions.
Digital content has become a key part of WXYZ’s and the industry’s operations as a whole, as consumers continue to expand their news consumption across multiple platforms such as TV, print and social media.
“From a digital perspective, it’s important to make sure we report the facts in a fair and balanced way on our websites, social platforms and streaming devices. We scour the internet to find out what we’re talking about, and to be curious, says Lyle Cifuentes, Digital Director at WXYZ.
Executive Producers lead a team of producers who research, search, review, plan, approve and produce daily and long-form news content. Producers also help create content for anchors and reporters. This includes contacting and researching sources, making copy, approving scripts, creating graphics, and ensuring accurate news coverage on multiple platforms.
The main role in the newsroom is the assignment editor. They investigate, respond, and scrutinize sources and sources, monitor police scanners, communicate with law enforcement, schedule Chopper 7, and stay up to date on all media, including social media. Get and help reporters and photographers with every article. When a viewer calls or contacts a news station, they speak to the editor of the assignment.
“With the WXYZ newsroom and most newsrooms, the assignment desk is the heart of the newsroom because it’s the gatekeeper to information dissemination. If you think about the command center, that’s exactly what it is,” Jones said.
“When it comes to people contacting us with ideas and stories, we really want people to see things and take them seriously,” Oliphant added.
Jones says one of the most important roles of quota editors is to “make sure what we put out is accurate.”
She said it makes no difference in the news department whether it’s on the web or on TV.
“We do not post unverified information. We always wait for fact-checking before posting stories on WXYZ.com and social platforms. The team also searches across metropolitan Detroit for positive community stories, We report good things that lift our spirits.Anchors, reporters and producers also contribute to our platform. It’s a true team effort.Overall, our priority is to help people get the news It’s about bringing news and information to your audience in the different digital spaces they consume,” said Cifuentes.
Anchors and reporters are responsible for finding stories, researching them, scrutinizing hints and sources, writing stories, and reporting their findings both live and on pre-recorded television. We work closely with editors and photographers to create news packages for television, broadcaster websites and social media.
A team of cameramen is tasked with capturing video content such as interviews, B-rolls, anchors, and reporter stand-ups before viewers see the on-air news package.
Back at the station, photographers and editors take what they’ve captured and transform the content into news packages and TV segments.
