I love good “life hacks”. It’s a way to complete a task or reach a goal by working smart instead of working hard. For example, as someone who avoids ironing at all costs, tossing a damp washcloth in the dryer to smooth wrinkled fabrics was a game changer for me (and my clothes).
Personally and professionally, building on the work I’ve already done is a lifehack that saves time, energy, and often money. That’s the premise behind the Oklahoma Higher Education Commission’s nationally recognized Show What You Know (SWYK) website. SWYK helps you determine how college credits, licenses, certifications, military training, and on-the-job knowledge apply to your degree.
The SWYK site helps you find educational paths that maximize your previous experience. The easy-to-use search feature is clear to individuals who have completed college coursework or are looking to convert previous learning into college credit, such as students who attended the Career Technology Center in Oklahoma, veterans, and members of the armed forces. Offer choice. A service, industry-recognized credential learner, and a student who took her AP course in high school.
SWYK connects to the Course Equivalency Project, which streamlines the transfer of credit for over 8,000 courses offered at Oklahoma institutions. Through SWYK, you can also learn about the Reach Higher Degree program, which helps adults go back and complete their degrees.
Have you attended the Career Technology Center? You may be eligible to receive college credit for work completed through over 360 cooperative agreements searchable on the SWYK site. Our public agencies partner with CareerTech centers through contracts, pre-learning credits, and technology transfers. Credits awarded through an approved technology center program can be applied toward a university technical certificate, associate degree in applied science, or bachelor of technology degree.
Did you have military service? If you are a veteran or currently serving in the military, you may be eligible for college credit for your training and occupation in the U.S. Armed Forces. SWYK helps identify colleges and universities that offer credit hours by evaluating military careers. It can be searched by service branch, institution, and subject area.
Do you have industry-recognized qualifications? These qualifications may be converted into credit towards a degree. SWYK features a searchable inventory of nationally recognized industry qualifications approved for college credit in key industries such as aviation, engineering and healthcare, and can be accessed by campus location and applicable college credit hours. is also included. In addition, SWYK offers an inventory of tests and assessments for advanced standing scores such as Advanced Placement (AP) courses and College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) tests.
What’s the point? SWYK makes it easier and faster for Oklahomans to upskill their careers by leveraging their past lives and work experience toward a degree. Many companies in sectors such as telecommunications, retail, banking, energy, healthcare, and manufacturing are also investing in Oklahoma’s future by offering higher education tuition to their employees. The benefits to the business community are clear. States with more college graduates have a stronger workforce and a more resilient economy.
