The Secretary-General said India is the largest provider of military and police personnel to UN missions, including the first all-female UN police contingent assigned to a UN peacekeeping mission.
He said more than 200,000 Indian men and women have taken part in 49 peacekeeping operations since they began in 1948.
The Secretary-General also noted that India, home to one-sixth of humanity and the world’s largest youth generation, could “make or fail” the 2030 Agenda.
“High impact” development
“India’s recent development course has been characterized by high-impact programs delivered at scale. It includes significant expansion.”
He encouraged India’s involvement in sweeping reforms of the world’s financial structure, which now favors the richest nations at the expense of others.
He also urged India to become a global superpower in renewable energy technologies and a manufacturing hub to fuel this revolution around the world.
He added that India’s voice on the global stage can only gain authority and credibility from a strong commitment to inclusiveness and respect for human rights at home.
