Effective Leadership Training Program
Mr. Chairman, thank you for giving me the opportunity to inform this honorable House of Representatives and this community about an effective leadership training program that began on January 18th.th Through a partnership with the Department of Education, Youth Affairs and Sports and the Institute of Education at H. Lavity Stout Community College.
Madam Chair, four newly appointed principals and vice-principals, and 30 aspiring principals comprise the cohort of educators who will be trained as part of this initiative. The Department of Education’s position is that effective school leadership is necessary for school success, teacher retention and student achievement. Global, regional and regional data help thriving schools develop innovative, ambitious and visionary ways to ensure that students are exposed to engaging and effective learning opportunities. It confirms that it is led by a transformative leader. Against this background, we have partnered with the Institute to develop a robust training program aimed at enhancing the leadership capacity of current and future school leaders and, in turn, strengthening schools in the region. Developed.
Madame Speaker, the program consists of face-to-face sessions on topics such as educational leadership, emotional intelligence, change and innovation leadership, human resource management, and special education leadership. Modules such as Madame Speaker, Instructional Leadership provide insight into the importance of monitoring classroom practice, identifying effective practices, and helping teachers become classroom professionals Leadership requires Emotional Intelligence and this module provides insight into how leaders should manage the different personalities that make up an organization. The Ministry has secured several local experts in the field of educational leadership to facilitate these three-hour sessions.
In addition, Madame Speaker, participants will be tasked with developing an electronic portfolio to document their growth and development throughout the programme. You will also be required to work with other school leaders to develop initiatives and programs to address the school’s most pressing needs. The Department of Education looks forward to improving leadership skills with this leadership training.
Mr. Chairman, this school year the Department of Education has implemented 20 hours of mandatory professional development per teacher for each grade level. An effective leadership training program is another way to meet that professional development requirement and support teaching and learning in the Virgin Islands. We would like to thank the Department of Education and his HLSCC Education Research Institute team for their continued efforts and to continue the Department of Education’s mission of increasing educational training and development opportunities for the Department of Education and its associated Universities.
