Following this, on the official IBC Accelerator Kickstart Day on February 8, 2023, ideas from the roundtable (and many other proposals) were narrowed down to the final list for inclusion in the 2023 programme. increase.
IBC2023 Accelerator: Building on Past Success
Mark Smith, Co-Leader of the IBC Accelerator Program, set a stall for the Accelerator Program at the IBC2023 Accelerator Sports Roundtable in December, highlighting the success of the IBC2022 Accelerator Program even under the time constraints imposed by the pandemic. started the meeting by mentioning
“The 2022 Accelerator Program has been a huge success in every way,” Smith confirmed. 2023 will be a better year than ever.”
The assembled panel of experts started by discussing World Cup 2022 and focused on some of the challenges of large-scale IP, especially the challenges of synchronization between different data feeds. The 2022 World Cup will see an explosion of data sources, including multiple camera feeds, athlete tracking, semi-automated offside technology, and soccer inertial measurement units (IMUs). Volume feeds are especially important when working with remote events.
Another key challenge is the difference in “speed” of these data sources. Visual data from camera feeds requires compression and may need editing, but pure data feeds from telemetry sensors in F1 cars, for example, are immediate, creating another gap. As one participant said:it’s about what the customer sees [the various data sources] On linear TV – some lag behind live data. So we almost need a mechanism to delay the live data into a synchronous experience…”
IBC2023 Accelerator: A Standardized Approach to the Cloud?
This led to an argument that the entire broadcast industry needed a standardized approach to cloud data. The discussion was fueled by comments about watching a World Cup match in a multi-screen environment where some screens are out of sync with others. A key challenge here is the prevalence of proprietary vendor audio and video synchronization standards that, while technical solutions are readily available, are not always easily interoperable.
Jonathan Hale, Discovery said: [potential Accelerator] It’s a project, not just audio. We all know SDI works and 2110 works, but the 2110 presents control plane challenges because of the scalability no one foresaw in the 2110 standard. Once in the cloud, everything we do is implemented with a large number of closed vendors. There are many proprietary implementations of NDI and a variety of single-vendor box solutions that work very small and allow innovation.
“But similar to the control challenges of 2110, there will be challenges in getting everything working together under a common API control plane with the transport at scale.”
“How can vendors move from proprietary to standard or common APIs, and what areas need to be standardized to best support workflows?”
IBC2023 Accelerator: Tackle Edge Computing Challenges
Matt Stagg, BT Sport were keen to build on the success of remote production in 2022. A central element of that was the design and construction of a private 5G network in a box. The box was used not only for the Queen’s funeral arrangements, but also as a connectivity solution around the world.
“Everybody likes to see something [physical]I’ve been thinking about how edge-based clouds or private clouds can be considered and if there is an opportunity to consider some of the orchestration.we [could have] A cloud server at your location. This gives us a very interesting opportunity to have fixed camera inputs as well as 5G, 5G [handled onsite]But you don’t have to build on AWS and have an architect.we can actually get people out there and do what we have to do [onsite]then turn off the power and move. ”
IBC2023 Accelerator: Diversity and Inclusion Are Key Considerations
Last but not least, the key points of discussion never revolved around the intrinsic issues of inclusivity and diversity, which were identified as key challenges. A key aspect was getting engagement from diverse young people.
Sky Sports’ Kevin McCue made a general cross-industry call. [we need to consider] How can I deal with it? ”
Suggestions were made to actively explore partnerships with non-profit organizations and educational partners so that young people can participate in the future. His Purminder Gandhu of the BBC summarizes: We also conducted a study so that young people could participate and ask questions. There is a big opportunity there.”
The 2023 IBC Accelerator Kickstart Day at the IET on February 8, 2023 will discuss a series of pitches for 2023 Accelerator project ideas selected from submissions received via the official application process. The event is free to attend for broadcasters, platforms, studios, and major media and technology vendors within the ecosystem. Also included are networking drinks and his 2022 Accelerator Project of the Year Award presentation.
