KINGSTON, NY — Saugerties-based construction company Jay Mullen & Sons has won the 2022 Ulster County Business of the Year Award.
One of eight companies, business leaders and organizations to be honored at the Business Recognition Awards Celebration dinner at the Ulster County Regional Chamber of Commerce, 404 Steward Lane, Kingston on Thursday, October 27th.30 pm
Other winners include Peekamoose Restaurant and Tap Room as Small Business of the Year. Charles Blaichman of CB Developers and Hotel Kinsley was named Business Person of the Year. Rail Explorers was named Tourism Business of the Year. Catholic charities in Orange, Sullivan, and Ulster counties received community engagement awards. A Heritage Award goes to his Scanlon dry cleaner. Ulster County Archivist Taylor Brook is named Emerging Young Leader, and Ulster County’s Len Kane Hart Award goes to HITS’ Tom Struzzieri.
“I feel very humbled and blessed,” said owner John Mullen.
Mullen recalls when he started his business in 1982, starting with something as small as a chimney, chopping firewood, and doing a side job as a union bricklayer when business was sluggish.
Today, the business has grown to employ about 110 people, including 20-30 union carpenters and workers, and 140-150 trucks that are kept on the road5. It includes ~6 mechanics, he said.
He has worked on building projects with Vassar College, BOCES, The Culinary Institute of America, and Marist College, and his company has done projects over the last 25-30 years. Undertake major projects.
Mullen said the company is working with Central Hudson on a five-year project to replace the company’s gas mains in communities across the Hudson Valley, as well as increasing field work for the utility’s electrical sector. I’m here. He added that the company is currently working on a similar replacement with National Grid, a utility entity as far west as Syracuse.
Still, 90% of the company’s employees live in Ulster County, and many have been there for 20 to 30 years, he said.
He said other projects include the construction of Home Depot and Lowe’s stores in the area, as well as masonry restoration projects on historic homes, including the Mills Mansion and Glasco Ponds in Saugerties.
Mullen’s wife, Peggy Mullen, is a third grade teacher at Riccardi Elementary School in Saugerties. The couple has six children. Mullen’s two sons, Johnhny Jr. and Shawn, work for the company as foremen.
His grandson, Jack Mullen, 14, is also learning the craft under close supervision, he said.
Mullen said he’s not afraid to fail. “I failed so many times and realized that I never want to fail again,” he said. “You just have to keep going.”
According to a press release, “This award recognizes Ulster County businesses that are leaders in their field and have achieved outstanding results or demonstrated dedication and commitment to promoting business and quality of life in Ulster County. It is an award.”
