Jim Ratcliffe joins bid to buy Manchester United
The billionaire owners of petrochemical company INEOS are ready to make an offer to United’s owner Glazer family, who indicated their intention to sell the Premier League club in November.
“We have officially joined the process,” INEOS said in a statement to the Associated Press on Tuesday.
Ratcliffe, one of Britain’s richest men, was a United fan and had previously indicated a desire to buy the club.
However, INEOS said in the summer that it was no longer interested in bids for the Premier League club, instead turning its attention to the French team it already owns, Nice.

The family, which also owns the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers, outlined plans to seek outside funding in November.
“As part of this process, the Board will consider all strategic alternatives, including new investments in the club, divestitures or other transactions involving the company,” a statement said at the time. .
Ratcliffe delayed buying Chelsea last year when former owner Roman Abramovich put the London club up for sale.
A consortium led by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital has finally secured a deal worth £2.5 billion ($3 billion) in Chelsea. This included the commitment of an additional £1.75 billion ($2 billion) of investment.
Despite reports of interest in acquiring United from the United States, the Middle East and Asia, INEOS is the first company to publicly confirm that it has entered the bidding process.
The late Malcolm Glaser bought United in 2005 for £790m (about $1.4bn at the time).
