M.All of us sweated it out with Joe Wicks. When the world went into lockdown in 2020, the UK-based fitness personality began sharing his daily workout sessions on YouTube. They were a sensation and he received over 100 million views worldwide.
Wicks considers these lockdown workout successes “the proudest achievements of his life,” but they weren’t his first forays into the world of fitness. He has been in this game for over 10 years. The Briton’s resume includes writing 11 cookbooks and launching his popular workout app, Body Coach. Last year, Wicks received his MBE for his services to fitness and charity.
Wicks is coming to Australia in February to host two workout events to raise funds for youth mental health charity ReachOut and wildlife group Taronga Conservation Society. This trip should be a little more comfortable than when Wicks first came to our shores when he was a backpacker fresh out of college.
“We came into Sydney, bought a small car for about $500 and drove around the East Coast,” says Wicks. “Byron he spent two months in the Bay and then went fruit picking in Cairns.
“I actually worked a day on a shrimp farm, and it was the worst thing in my life.
Before becoming an internet star, Wicks was a personal trainer who rarely attended bootcamps in a small town outside London. “It’s a really slow start,” he admits. Here Wicks talks about the items that helped launch his career at the time, along with two other important personal items of his.
What you can save from your home in a fire
During lockdown, I went to Windsor Palace to receive an MBE from Princess Anne. Lives in a medal box on my bedside table. It’s not the metal itself that I care about, it’s the symbol of what I’ve achieved.

I went to collect it with my brother Nikki and it was such a big moment for us. I grew up in a house. Our father was also a drug addict from an early age. He was really dysfunctional, was in and out of the house and wasn’t really there. We were two children who were not expected to be outrageous.
It was truly amazing to bend over and be there with this award given to us by a member of the royal family since our childhood. I share this story because I want people to know that you can actually get over it and have a really great life at the end of it.

It’s something I’ve been addicted to lately, and it’s become a daily ritual: my ice bath.
Imagine a large chest freezer. However, it is clad in wood on the outside and has a steel tub on the inside. Generates ice from below. So if it rains, is sunny, or dives into a hot day, it will constantly produce ice. If I’ve had a stressful day, or I’m overworked or exhausted, I jump into an ice bath for 1-5 minutes. I’m really looking forward to it.
I used to hate the cold, but now I hate the cold. It’s so good for your mind – it clears everything out of your head. For me, it’s more about energy and stress relief than it is about toning muscles and joints. This is another advantage of ice baths. So I think it will continue for many years to come.
The item you most regret losing
When I started bootcamp 10 years ago, I couldn’t afford a van. So I had a bike trailer, sort of a big cage with two wheels that I clipped onto the back of the bike and pulled things over. We cycled to the park where we set up camp.
Years later, when I no longer needed it, my father said I should keep it. I was thinking, “I’m not going to use it.” I kept it in his father’s garden, but it eventually rusted and he disposed of it.
But it symbolized where I started my business and my career as a trainer, so I wish I still had it. I was pulling something heavy. I should have kept it, really.
