Western Australia’s opposition is in turmoil as Libby Mettum prepares to challenge the Liberal Party leader.
Key Point:
- Libby Metam called David Honey to let him know about his leadership challenge
- She also sent letters to him and other Liberal MPs
- Spillmotion is submitted before a special party room meeting on Tuesday
Metham wrote to Liberal Party leader David Honey just after 6 p.m. on Friday, telling him that he intended to challenge him for the role.
“In addition to our telephone conversation, to inform you that we are proposing to challenge the Liberal Party leader in parliament and requesting that a special party room meeting be convened this Tuesday. I am writing to,” she said in an email.
That’s just hours after the shock resignation of National Party leader and state opposition leader Mia Davis.
In Western Australia, the state’s opposition consists of an alliance of the National Party and the Liberal Party.
The Liberals were all but wiped out in the 2021 state elections, leaving the National Party with 4-2 seats in WA’s House of Representatives over the Liberals.
As a result, the Nationals were technically the state’s opposition party, and both parties formed an opposition alliance with Nationals leader Mia Davis as opposition leader.
But today, Ms. Davis announced that she will not be running in the 2025 election, resigning as party leader and leaving the Nationals on next week’s ballot for a new opposition leader.
The split within the Liberal Party follows the shocking announcement, with Libby Metham also emailing seven members of the House of Councillors.no
‘Change is essential’
In the letter, Metam said her decision was not taken lightly.
“I made this decision after a lot of reflection and consultation,” she said.
“This has been a very difficult time for the Liberal Party in Congress and their readiness to assume leadership duties following the last election is widely acknowledged.”
“But I believe we have not been as effective as we should have been and change is needed now to enable the Liberal Party to develop a strong, diverse, connected and competitive team. .
“We believe this change is essential to reorganize and re-emerge as a Western Australian political party championing ambitious Western Australian people, families, small businesses, tax relief and community safety. .”
Ms. Mttam is a member of Vasse and a health spokeswoman for the opposition.
Mettam targeting Washington state government
She also used a message to Dr. Honey to whack the Labor government.
“It is my view that leadership change is a matter of urgency as we see an increasingly arrogant and selfish government taking the people of Western Australia for granted.”
“I share your frustration with having only two Liberal MPs in the Legislative Assembly. It is ruled by a Prime Minister who is completely indifferent to the difficulties it faces.”
Cottesloe member Dr Honey declined to comment on Mr Metham’s leadership challenges.
Ms Metam said she and her only Liberal colleague in the Legislative Assembly, David Honey, can continue to work together.
“I have copied this email to the Congress team for transparency and as a courtesy to my colleagues,” she wrote.
“Regardless of Tuesday’s outcome, I believe we can continue to work together to achieve more for the people of Western Australia heading into the 2025 state elections.”
It was hoped among Liberal lawmakers that Ms Metam would have the numbers to succeed in her challenge.
Dr. Honey is rumored to only endorse Nick Goylan and potentially Neil Thomson.
