As the new coach of the George Mason University baseball team, Sean Camp has a wealth of knowledge.
Not only because of his 11-year major league career as a pitcher, but because, as he said, he played for two of the game’s most prominent managers. Cito Gaston of the Toronto Blue Jays and Joe Maddon of the Tampa Bay Rays.
From Gaston, Camp said he has an open door policy.
“But if you go to his office,” he said of Gaston.
From Madone, it’s a player’s coach. “He could talk to you about anything,” Camp said.
Underlying it all is Camp’s longstanding relationship with Bill Brown, who resigned in July after 41 years leading the Patriots, and he’s known Camp since he was 9 when he attended Brown’s baseball camp. .
“I consider him a good friend. I wouldn’t be here today.”
The relationship between Camp and Mason is deep.
A native of Fairfax, Virginia, he played for Mason from 1995-1997. He will also complete his sociology degree in 2021. He said this was important to him because he took classes throughout his playing career.
“My life kind of came full circle,” Camp said. “This is where I, as a kid of nine, started playing Bill Brown his baseball, running around the grounds and fields of his camps and his house, for a man I absolutely admired. ”
On the type of team the camp wants to build, he says it starts with players who want to play for each other and who can support a strong clubhouse. He also wants speed and athleticism so pitchers can be confident that the back defense will do the job.
But Camp also knows there’s more to his assistants than helping them fine-tune products in the field and hiring them.
“You have to be honest with them,” he said of his players. “How I personally earn their trust is that I am open and honest with them. My door is always open to them. I want to feel like I can talk to you about certain things, and I always tell them, ‘What you do with your life is more important than what you do on the field.'”
“Sean is an energetic leader and we believe he will continue to build on the outstanding foundation laid by his mentor Bill Brown,” said Mason’s Athletics director Brad Edwards. . “Since joining Mason, Sean has left an indelible mark on the program. He has helped develop a culture of accountability while prioritizing achievements on and off the field.”
Whether the team can build on last season’s 13-12 record was eliminated from the Atlantic 10 tournament with two losses after posting an 11-7 streak. It’ll also be fun to see if Camp uses any of the tricks Maddon employs to keep things bright at the Rays.
Camp didn’t hint, but said, “I have some tricks.”
