MEXICO — The Region 9 School of Applied Technology is seeking a $5.48 million grant from federal funds to build and equip three buildings on the school’s grounds, said Newry’s school board president on Friday. said Norm Clanton,
The school of career and technical education will put the referendum questions on ballots for each of the 16 participating towns on Election Day, Nov. 8, Clanton said. The question asks whether the resident will accept the grant he requested for the construction and equipment of the three buildings.

The cities sending students to the Region 9 School of Applied Technology are Ramford, Mexico, Roxbury, Hanover, Bethel, Newry, Woodstock, Greenwood, Dixfield, Canton, Carthage, Peru, Andover, Byron, Gilead, Upton.
The grant application seeks funding for buildings for the school’s Welding Program, Culinary Arts Program, and Outdoor Skills and Leadership Program. The school’s welding program requires $3.72 million for classrooms and labs. About $1.1 million for a greenhouse culinary arts program with an outdoor kitchen and market. $665,000 is requested for an educational center for the school’s outdoor skills and leadership programs.
Clanton said the CTE schools will know “soon,” perhaps within the next week or two, if they will be awarded all or part of the grant they are seeking.
“But the ability to use (the grant), if offered, is contingent on voters saying OK (to use the grant to build three buildings).” Referendum on Election Day By doing so, he said, schools could “save a lot of money that way” and not have to do another referendum ballot.
“We also need to get[voter]approval, so once[the grant]is offered, we can[start building plans],” Clanton said.
An information hearing on the referendum questions will be held on November 1 at 6:00 pm at the Region 9 Applied Technology School in Mexico.
