Imagine a Sunday dinner at grandma’s house – a family dinner that starts with an appetizer, a Caesar salad drizzled with shaved cheese, a big bowl of pasta, a lavish chicken parm or spaghetti and meatballs – appealing to A classic Italian comfort food that will please the taste buds of all ages. That’s the atmosphere chef/owner Tony Camilleri and co-owners Stretch Altenhain and James Lafond have created in his kitchen at Park Road His Pasta.
In just two weeks, the Mexican atmosphere of the former Toro Taberna space has been transformed into a classic Italian family restaurant. Modeled in part after New York City’s iconic Carmine’s Italian restaurant, PK’s pasta dishes, entrees and starters are all available in individual portions as well as family-style, made for sharing. The prices are reasonable and the individual dishes are definitely more than adequate.
“This is a family gathering,” said general manager Tom Gale.
Extensive cocktail menu, draft beers, and a large selection of Italian wines by the glass or bottle. As a perfect complement, the House Red Sangiovese Table Wine is also available by the glass, half jug, or full 32oz jug.
“I’ve been talking about Italian home cooking for a while,” said Camilleri. “I miss cooking Italian food. I have a strong background,” he said, adding that he and his partner were looking for spaces throughout the region. , longed for old-school Italian food, but when they realized it was a perfect concept outside of West Hartford, especially the Center, they decided to transform the Toro Taverna space.
The bread that arrives at your table is like a mini pizza, lightly fried dough topped with red sauce and sprinkled with parmigiana and chopped basil leaves.
In addition to meat and cheese selections, starters are available in personal sizes ($8-$13) or family style for sharing between 3 or 4 people. Highlights include meatballs, garlic cheese bread (whipped ricotta, parmesan, fresh mozzarella and lots of garlic), arancini balls with red sauce or truffle aioli and of course Calabrian chili aioli Includes fried calamari.
A selection of salads are available in individual portions or family-style to share at the table.
The deep-fried dough – aka personal pizza – can be topped with a variety of meats and vegetables.
Pasta is a natural staple on the menu at Park Road Pasta Kitchen, with options ranging from traditional spaghetti and meatballs to pesto rigatoni, cavetelli with sausage and broccoli rabe, and fettuccini Alfredo. . For those craving seafood, there’s the ricotta gnocchi and prawns, or the fra diavolo with prawns, mussels and clams in a spicy sauce served with spaghetti. Hearty individual portions start at $13, and all pastas are also available family-style.
Entrees include chicken, veal, or eggplant versions of parmigiana, chicken marsala, and herb-crusted salmon, all served with pasta on the side. The chicken is so tender that you don’t need a knife. Individual entrees start at $19, all also available in family sizes.
For those in the “sandwich” mood, the Franklin Avenue Grinder is also suitable for classic Italian mode. A beef, chicken, eggplant, or veal cutlet sandwich served on a 14-inch roll with sauce, provolone, and roasted his peppers. The ‘Italian Job’ includes all meats, prosciutto, sweet coppa hot sopressata, salami, lettuce, green peppers and topped with a vinaigrette.
Desserts are recommended, even if you think you can’t eat more. Light and airy tiramisu, cannoli, chocolate hazelnut cake topped with luxaldo cherries, and a plate of cookies (including chocolate dream his cookies) and more.
The menu at Toro Taberna is completely gluten-free, and like other restaurants by the same owner (Toro Mexican Street Food in Raymond Road and Toro Loco in Farmington), Park Road Pasta Kitchen’s menu contains gluten. No, but almost all dishes are included. Gale said it can be made gluten-free.
“We have two featured gluten-free pastas every night,” says Gale, which can be used with any entree. Gluten-free bread, cauliflower crust pizza, and parmigiana can be prepared without crumbs. It is cooked on different sides, so it is safe for those with celiac disease.
Chocolate cake is of course gluten-free.
The bar has been reconfigured and the interior brightened with gray paint and red and white accents. New booths have been installed and tables can be combined to accommodate larger groups.
Sports are shown on the bar’s TV, while the other two video screens show classic movies.
There are other restaurants in West Hartford that serve Italian cuisine, but Park Road Pasta Kitchen’s old-school style and focus on family-friendly portions sets it apart. “It fills in the blanks,” said Camilleri.
Park Road Pasta Kitchen had a successful soft opening on Sunday and is now open for dinner seven days a week. Hours of operation are Sunday 4-9 PM. Monday from 3:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 3pm to 10pm. Friday and Saturday from 3pm to 11pm. The lunch service will be added in the coming weeks, he said.
