Families are shocked by the murder of a Miami woman who said she was shot dead by her ex-boyfriend on New Year’s Eve.
Julio Morales, 27, turned himself in after the shooting and is being charged with second-degree murder with a weapon, according to the Miami Police Department arrest report.
The family identified the victim as 24-year-old Esterling Garcia. Her sister said in a phone interview that Garcia was waiting for an Uber to arrive at her Arapata apartment to go out with her friends that night.
Garcia said she left the apartment thinking her Uber was there, but when she opened the door, she found that Morales was armed.
Morales shot Garcia as she tried to escape and hit her twice in the head, her sister said.
Morales told detectives he lent $4,000 to his ex-girlfriend and $1,000 to a friend before they broke up four months ago. The two had been dating for three years.
Garcia’s sister said the couple broke up in August and Morales had been stalking her.
Police said Morales made several attempts to retrieve the money but was attacked by the victim’s new boyfriend and a friend of his.
Morales came to her residence on the 1,000th block of NW 30th Street on Saturday night to try to recover money from her ex-husband, police said.
According to police, he got into an argument with the victim, who said he was not going to give him the money.

When police arrived at the residence, they found the victim bleeding on the ground from several gunshot wounds. She was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where she died. Police did not reveal her identity.
Police said Morales called 911 minutes after the shooting to say he wanted to turn himself in.
Detectives later discovered that Morales and the victim had past histories of domestic violence, and witnesses claimed Morales was aggressive towards the victim while at work and had previously accused her of harassing her if she started dating someone else. threatened to kill him.
Morales appeared in bonded court on Wednesday, where the judge ordered Morales to remain in prison without bail.
