The Samsung Galaxy A22 5G and TCL 20 R 5G are two of the cheapest 5G handsets currently available in South Africa, both priced under R4,000.
The A22 5G is available in violet, grey, white and mint colors and is currently available on Game for R3,749, while Samsung lists it as R3,999. It costs R3,899 and is only available at Truworths stores.

Screen size matters
Samsung is known for making great screens, and it’s packed into the A22’s 6.6-inch TFT display. It has an 82.3% screen-to-body ratio and features Samsung’s Infinity-V display that houses the top center of the V-shaped selfie camera. It supports smooth scrolling and a 90Hz screen refresh rate that stands out in games.

The handset has a Full HD+ display with a resolution of 1080 x 2408 pixels, or 399ppi (pixels per inch). Unfortunately, it doesn’t have an AMOLED display like the A33.
The A22 weighs 203g.
In comparison, the TCL 20 R features a slightly smaller 6.52-inch IPS LCD display with a screen-to-body ratio of 90%. It also has a V-notch display and a 90Hz screen refresh rate, but the display has a lower resolution. Its HD+ screen is 720 x 1600 pixels with 268ppi (pixels per inch) and a brightness of 500nits.

under the hood
Both the A22 and 20 R are powered by the Mediatek MT6833 Dimensity 700 (7nm) octa-core chipset and start with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. Please note that most Android smartphones come with bloatware pre-installed. This means that when you turn it on, some of the storage is used by the OS. At setup the A22 uses 18.5 GB of internal storage with only 45.5 GB free. That said, both handsets offer expandable storage slots of up to 1TB, with the 20 R using a shared dual SIM slot. Both have 3.5mm audio jacks and USB-C ports.
Both handsets support 5G connectivity along with WiFi, WiFi Direct and Bluetooth, but very importantly only the 20 R supports NFC. Samsung has NFC listed on his A22 5G in South Africa but when I tried to download the Samsung Pay app I came across “This phone is not compatible with this app”. This is important if you want ‘tap to pay’ functionality and don’t carry a bank card.
Sensors on both handsets include accelerometers, proximity and light sensors, fingerprint readers, and face unlock.

The A22 has a 48MP main shooter, a 5MP ultra-wide camera, and a 2MP depth camera that captures wide shots up to 115 degrees. It supports HDR and allows you to take portrait shots with manual control of background blur using the depth camera. The 8MP selfie camera also supports bokeh effect. The rear lens shoots 2K video and slow motion at 120fps.

The 20 R has a 13MP main AI camera, supported by a 2MP macro lens and a 2MP depth camera for bokeh-style portrait shots. HDR support for videos up to 1080p. The 8MP selfie camera can also shoot at 1080p.

Battery day and night
The A22 has a 5000mAh battery, which is typically found in premium handsets. With the right settings and tweaks, the 90Hz refresh rate will last longer instead of sticking to it forever. It also supports 15W fast charging.
The 20 R is equipped with a 4500mAh battery and supports power saving mode to prevent battery drain. 34 hours of talk time, 10 hours of video playback, and 210 hours of audio playback. It also supports fast charging up to 15W.
verdict
From a performance standpoint, both run the same chipset, but the A22 5G has a better display and camera with 2K video recording and a larger battery, but lacks NFC. On the other hand, the TCL 20 R 5G is listed by Google as an Android enterprise recommended device. This means it meets the company’s stringent enterprise requirements for running its business. The Samsung A22 has more consumer appeal, while the TCL 20 R is more business-ready.
But ultimately, do you want to use your smartphone for tap-to-pay?
