Large screen devices are more useful with landscape mode

At I/O 2022, Google announced that it will be updating more than 20 apps with tablet-friendly interfaces. Last week, the first of these updates rolled out to Lens, improving the app UI in landscape mode. Now Google is upgrading the calculator app to improve user experience.

Previously, the landscape Google Calculator was essentially similar to the portrait version, but stretched across the screen. However, version 8.2 has an improved layout (by 9to5Google). Turn your tablet sideways to view the tally history on the left side of the main UI. This means you don’t have to pull down the screen to hide the keys whenever you want to access your past calculations.

On the other hand, there is a small arrow on the bottom left that allows you to display more or less function keys. However, this multitasking-friendly two-row UI for him is limited to tablets in landscape mode. The portrait phone UI and tablet interface have not changed.

Last week, the company updated its Google apps (including Assistant, Podcasts, and Lens, by association) to version 13.19 in its beta channel. New software enables Google Lens to work in landscape orientation on tablets for the first time, giving users another way to take advantage of large-screen devices.

This calculator’s two-column UI does a similar job. New versions of the software are now available via the Google Play Store, but may take some time to appear. If not yet available, you can manually download it from APKMirror.

Aside from Lens and Calculator, expect Google to roll out updates to improve the interface of many other apps. Unfortunately, there’s no official list of which apps will be upgraded, but we expect Maps, Photos, and the Play Store to be among them. I hope the developers will start optimizing their apps for tablets.
