Every Monday, we ask small businesses important questions. Here, we speak to her Inverurie-based surveyor Michaela Gordon-Wilson of Gordon-Wilson Services.
She said she feels very lucky to have a network of “smart and intelligent” friends.
How and why did you start your business?
As an experienced Quantitative Surveyor (QS), I have noticed a gap in the market for working as an independent consultant.
The QS is the person expected to manage the costs associated with a construction project while advocating for the client in cost-related discussions.
I wanted to support local small businesses that were unable to do a dedicated QS.
How did you get to where you are now?
My career story began when I chose standard grades at the age of 14. I like geography, mathematics, and physics, and in my search for jobs of these interests, Quantitative Research came to mind.
I have worked in the oil and gas sector and in construction both as a client and in a trading role. It wasn’t a direct route to owning my own business, but it was a great experience.
I really enjoy helping my clients complete bids and quotes while ensuring they are more commercially protected.
who helped you?
My family has given me career advice over the years. I also had support from my previous manager who mentored me.
I am very lucky to have a network of excellent and intelligent friends.
I have joined the Small Business Federation and have access to its amazing range of online legal documents.
I am also a member of Business Networking International (BNI) and my BNI crew has helped me in many ways.
Their energy and experience gave me the confidence to become a manager. I really enjoy networking and meeting people who are passionate about their work.
What’s the best advice ever?
What’s the reason you don’t go by your side?
what is your biggest mistake?
I hate questions like this. You can’t go wrong if you learn from it and grow from it.
What is your greatest achievement?
Learning to be a good snowboard instructor. It has shaped many wonderful things throughout my life.
How are you managing rapidly rising costs? How can the government help?
I live in a modern, energy efficient home, which really helps ease the burden of rising bills.
The Scottish government can support the local economy by lowering business fees. This helps keep people in jobs that are essential for economic growth and benefits everyone in the long run.
When it comes to energy, the UK and Scottish governments should provide more support for businesses to better insulate their premises. Helps reduce costs and energy emissions.
what do you still want to achieve?
I am working towards my Modification Coordinator certification. It’s a difficult course so I’m really proud to have this under my belt as it’s an integral part of helping our business and his community transition to zero carbon emissions. will be
what do you do to relax?
I take my dog for walks in the woods and sit and paint.
What are you currently reading, listening to, or obsessed with on TV?
I am currently reading the camera manual. I’m doing a beginner photography course with award-winning local photographer Iska Birnie, so I’m trying to memorize everything that comes in handy.
On television, he’s working on SAS Rogue Heroes. It’s an interesting clock and the soundtrack is cracking. Also enjoy his Jazz Cozy Christmas on Spotify. A great way to relax.
what do you waste your money on?
Although it is an outdoor pursuit, it is really not in vain.
What is the first thing you do when you wake up in the morning?
Clear notifications from phone and email. I like to start my day with a clean slate.
What do you drive and dream of driving?
I own a Ford Fiesta. It is a light car that is very easy to handle. My dream car is a Land Rover Defender. I love going on adventures and having the right car helps you out.
