How are Social Security payment dates determined?
The Social Security Administration makes payments on three different Wednesdays each month (the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Wednesdays). The Wednesday you receive your money depends on your date of birth. Payments to SSI recipients are generally made on the 1st of each month (see below). Let’s break it down.
- If your birthday falls between the 1st and 10th of the month, payments will be made on the 2nd Wednesday of the month.
- If your birthday falls between the 11th and 20th of the month, payments will be made on the 3rd Wednesday of the month.
- If your birthday falls between the 21st and 31st of the month, payments will be made on the 4th Wednesday of the month.
What if I receive both Social Security and SSI?
If you received Social Security benefits before May 1997, or if you received both Social Security and SSI, your payment schedule is different. Instead of receiving payments on Wednesdays, you will receive Social Security payments on the 3rd of each month and SSIs on the 1st of each month.
However, if the 1st or 3rd of the month falls on a weekend, these payment dates will change. For example, this year his October 1st was a Saturday, so the SSI beneficiary will receive his October payout on September 30th, one day early, and his Social Security payment on Monday, October 3rd. received on The same is true for the December he January 2023 payment.
