Atlanta – The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said Atlanta police officers shot dead a man who witnessed him firing a gun across from Chick-fil-A in southwestern Atlanta on Friday night.
A nearby barbershop was caught in the crossfire as bullets were flying.
“We just had the window replaced yesterday and now the door needs to be replaced because it got a bullet in it,” says Sabir Grant, barber at KO Barber Shop.
He has worked as a barber at Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive for the past 10 years, but things have gotten worse lately, he said.
“It’s never happened before,” said Grant. “There’s always something going on everywhere, but it seems to have gotten much more intense since the gun laws changed.”
The latest ‘intense’ situation occurred just before 9pm on Friday night

“There was a firefight going on here in MLK. When the officers got out of the car, they encountered someone actively firing their weapons,” said deputy commissioner Charles Hampton Jr.
Investigators said the officer opened fire after repeatedly ordering the man to drop his weapon. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has announced that 35-year-old Willie Williams has been murdered. No officers were injured.
“At this time, it is unclear whether the injuries were the result of the officer’s shooting, as he was actively involved in previous shootouts,” Hampton Jr. said.
The shooting was the latest in a string of violence in the area. On Wednesday, a KFC employee was injured in a shooting less than a quarter mile away. A man died Thursday on Joseph E. Boone Boulevard, about a mile away.
Back at the barbershop, Grant said many of the problems in the area were caused by people who didn’t live here.
“We live in a situation where guns are very accessible right now, so I hope they’re more concerned about pressing issues,” Grant said.
Grant said the increase in violence looks bad to them, even though they are innocent.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating a shooting involving a police officer. Atlanta police did not explain what they believed happened before officers arrived.
